Welcome to Year 2 Parent Information Evening Wednesday 13th September 2017

Introduction and General Expectations Staff introductions Structure of day in Year 2, including Maths, English, Spelling and Grammar (GPS). Behaviour policy, rewards and Expectations.

Homework Children stick sheet into Homework Books every Monday. Children hand completed work to teacher during the following week. Homework should be completed in the Homework Book. Parental help and expectations.

Maths Homework Please use the Booklet For Parents to help understand how we teach maths in Year 2. We will send 3 booklets during the year. Most important aspect of maths is now Problem Solving. Structure of maths homework and expectations.

English Homework This also reinforces work being done in school. Structure of English homework. Spoken and written expectations.

Spelling Homework Children copy 5 words into Spelling Book every Monday and will be tested the following Monday, using the words in a given sentence. The spelling rule for the week will be explained and a challenge will be given for those who find the 5 words less challenging. Children will be expected to spell all of these words correctly in all of their writing. We will also send home approximately 15 Common Exception words each term – these must be learned and used correctly in all writing. We work on all of these words in school – homework reinforces school learning.

Reading at Home Children bring a banded book on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, broadly matched to their ability. Sometimes they will bring a free choice book to share with an adult. How to use the Guided Reading Record book. Importance of comprehension skills in Year 2.

Assessment in Year 2 Assessment is continuous, based on Government guidelines of Working Towards the Expected Standard Working at the Expected Standard Working at Greater Depth within the Expected Standard. Each child has individual targets which they work towards, both small steps and end of year targets. Shared at Parent Consultations.

End of Year Statutory Testing Phonics screening retakes. Maths – Arithmetic and Reasoning papers Reading – 2 reading comprehension papers GPS – one spelling paper and a paper to assess grammar and punctuation. There is no separate written paper. Final assessment given is a Teacher Assessment based on a combination of test results and general work in school over the year.
