Themes Autumn: Diversity, Values and Perceptions Spring: Fairness, Sustainable Development Summer Term: Interdependence, Aspirations

EI Autumn: Respectful, Understanding Spring: Compassionate, Responsible Summer: Patient, Positive

Maths As in Year 1, we follow the Maths No Problem (Singapore Maths) scheme. We focus on problem solving, reasoning and fluency We work in Workbooks and in Journals.

Maths How can you support at home? Practise number bonds to 20 (e.g. 7 + 2 = 9 14 – 8 = 6) Rehearse multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times table and counting in 3s In the shop, get them to find the right amount using coins Practise telling the time to the nearest quarter hour Rehearse the names of shapes

English Similar to Year 1, linked heavily to Theme. Spelling: Broadly similar to phonics in Year 1. Grammar: Look out for new terms such as conjunctions, expanded noun-phrases and exclamations. Types of text: Children write a wider range of text in Year 2, and a lot more!

English How can you support at home? Read with your child lots (more on this in a moment!) Help your child learn words that they find difficult to read and spell (please use the ‘tricky word’ section in the Reading Log) Be aware of some of the Year 2 grammatical terms and help your child spot them in a text (we can help with this if you are not sure) Encourage editing and proof-reading of work

Reading Logs Reading logs will need to be in every day. They are a great way of both parents/carers and school sharing golden moments and green next steps. The more reading ‘miles’, the better! Make it a habit! Dojos are on offer for signed reading logs (so expect to be nagged!) Children will bring home a ‘banded’ book which they should be able to read with only a few mistakes. They may also bring home a library book. It is helpful for children to read their reading book more than once to develop their phrasing and fluency (we aim for 90 words a minute in Year 2!). Speak to us about how to give prompts.

Homework Homework is given out each half term, along with the Newsletter. It links to the learning in the classroom. There is a ‘menu’ of tasks – your child can pick which tasks they wish to do. As with Reading Logs, Dojos are on offer. Harder tasks earn more Dojos (again, expect to be nagged!). Homework will be marked (and Dojos will be awarded) over the holidays, before the Homework books are sent home again at the start of the next half term. In addition, we can give advice on other homework you may wish to give your child. Please chat to us.

Homework

PE Kits PE kits need to be in school on a Monday and left in school until Friday – we normally stick to the same PE days, but sometimes have to move things around The PE Kits need: Black shorts/leggings White t-shirt Trainers/Pumps/Plimsolls Please ensure that all clothing is labelled with your child’s name and class

Tests and Transition In May, the children will sit their Key Stage 1 Tests in: Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG) Maths – arithmetic and reasoning Reading - including fiction and non-fiction A meeting on the Tests will be held closer to the time. In June and July, we will have a transition programme to get the children ready for the switch to the Juniors Towards the end of the Summer term, we look forward to seeing you for the Moving On Assembly.

Any Questions? Contact us with ‘FAO Mr Way / Miss Furey’ in the email title via communication@manleypark.com We are always available at the start of the day or the end of the day for a chat. Please also ensure that you have ‘PARENT HUB’ set up – speak to Miss Maguire (Admin) or Miss Sobolewski (Family Support)
