A child’s brain grows to 90% of its full size by age five. Why We Do It Early Literacy Matters A child’s brain grows to 90% of its full size by age five. Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to literacy acquisition. Children raised in homes with 25 books or more pursue 3 years more of school than children from bookless homes. Imagination Library is a monthly reminder to spend time reading to a child. 80% Age 3 90% Age 5 Brain Development Meta- analysis pdf

Program Impacts

Early Literacy Matters Reading Aloud Builds Early Literacy and Improves Listening Skills Develop phonemic awareness Vocabulary, comprehension, concentration, memory and curiosity Of all the activities considered possibly helpful for the acquisition of literacy, only one—listening to stories—was significantly associated with later test scores. Children entering kindergarten with basic reading skills are three to four times more likely to graduate from high school.

Imagination Library is part of the statewide literacy conversation Read to Be Ready TN Department of Education Statewide initiative launched by the TN Department of Education and Governor and First Lady Haslam Goal: Raise TN’s reading scores among students, aimed at getting 75 percent of all third-graders proficient in reading by 2025. Currently, 43% of TN third graders read proficiently. GBBF/IL serves as the early chapter of building literacy skills; the cradle of the “cradle to career” continuum

Imagination Library is part of the statewide literacy conversation ECD “ThreeStar” Grants TN Department of Economic & Community Development ECD offers Three Star Grants to county governments, made available through an application process. As part of the application, a county must be measured by their ECD Three Star Report Card. GBBF/IL enrollment is included under the Education section of the Three Star Report Card. You can download your county score card here: https://www.tn.gov/ecd/topic/threestar-scorecards

Research of IL Impacts on kindergarten readiness on IL participants vs. non-IL participants IL participants outscored their peers in every section of the kindergarten survey-reading, speaking, thinking, and social skills.
