Panagiotis (Panos) Artemiadis, PhD Arizona State University Keywords: dynamics, controls, robotics, cloud Cloud-based experimental platform for understanding dynamics and controls Panagiotis (Panos) Artemiadis, PhD Arizona State University Human-Oriented Robotics and Control (HORC) Lab

Why? Understanding of controls systems and dynamics is limited when based only on theory Develop an experimental platform that applies dynamics and controls concepts, which would be available 24/7 (on the cloud) for real-time access and experimentation by the students Human-Oriented Robotics and Control (HORC) Lab

When? Developed a rotational mechanical system with a controller, amplifier, dc motor, load and sensors in Summer 2012. Resulted in labs for MAE 318: Systems Dynamics & Controls The future idea is to make this setup available online for real-time web-based interaction.

Where? Have not tried elsewhere yet Initially developed for undergraduate controls class (MAE 318), but can be used in graduate level (e.g. MAE 508: Digital Control, MAE 547: Modelling & Control of Robots) Human-Oriented Robotics and Control (HORC) Lab

What? Experimental setup with position and velocity control of a load connected to a DC motor Internet-based 24/7 access to the setup for real-time experimentation would enhance understanding Already developed labs make class more interesting and significantly enhanced students’ understanding of concepts such as dynamics & controls Human-Oriented Robotics and Control (HORC) Lab

Prognosis? Impact will be document via online and end-of-semester students’ feedback requests. The number of times the cloud-based setup is accessed will be monitored too. I plan to add more setups related to more advanced topics (e.g. frequency response) in the future No significant challenges so far Would be interested to know from others the setups they use for controls experimentation Human-Oriented Robotics and Control (HORC) Lab
