IS3321 Today’s lecture Topics Answering questions Big data, the cloud, and the movement of information on the web The erosion of organisational boundaries The interaction between organisations and online crowds Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs) Answering questions

Big data, the cloud, and the movement of information on the web What is big data and how does it differ from regular data? What has happened technologically and socially to make big data possible? Why is capturing useful data difficult? What are the benefits of moving to the cloud? What social and managerial challenges are presented by big data? Examples, examples, examples!

The erosion of organisational boundaries How is this erosion happening in terms of Technology? Personnel? How does an organisation best position itself with surrounding digital businesses and communities? What types of tasks may take place inside and outside of an organisation and why? Examples, examples, examples!

The interaction between organisations and online crowds What is the wisdom of crowds and what is it that makes some crowds wise and others not wise? What are the different forms of crowdsourcing that exist and what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? What are the strategic difficulties of crowd participation? How have different forms of crowdsourcing enabled innovative and valuable new business models? Examples, examples, examples!

Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs) How and why are DFDs used during analysis and design and how does this fit together with other analysis and design techniques? How and why are DFDs structured across different levels? When might different levels be used during analysis and design? Draw either a context-level (just external entities) or level 1 DFD (sub-processes and data stores) for some narrative

Answering Questions Exam technique Manage your time Plan your answers and sketch out diagrams Bring a pencil and eraser! Answer your best questions first Use examples Be prescriptive, where possible
