Model Paragraph 9 years ago, I began a journey to growth by choosing to step out of a job of comfort into a job of the unknown. I had worked as a dance/drill team director for 21 years, 7 at Willis High School and 14 at Langham Creek High School. I knew the ins and outs of the job like running a productive practice, producing dynamic choreography that would please a football crowd and thrill competition judges managing 80 teenage girls at a time, day in and day out. I knew the job like the back of my hand my hand and had even experienced recognition at the district with my name on the Hall of Fame wall and state level, winning Director of the Year for the state of Texas. However, after 21 years of doing the same thing and being at the top of my field, I was ready for a challenge, a way to grow. Although it was a terrifying ordeal, I decided to change from teaching dance to instructing into the academic classroom teaching English.

Managing the English class tests my abilities even more so than the dance classroom because where in dance, the class is considered an elective, the English class is mandatory, meaning many students would prefer having a root canal over attending the English class. In addition, I had a tremendous amount of catching up to do challenge students with the rigor expected of a Cypress Woods High School student. Even though the early years of the change presented me with stress, doubt, and insecurity, today, I know that I have the strength, creativity and confidence that I would have never attained had I settled for comfort.
