Do now! Monday -- Warm-up 1. Make sure you have picked up the “Literary Term Diagnostic Assessment” as well as your graded quiz. 3. Have a pen out and ready to go!

Class poem – From “Return to Love by Marianne Williamson Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. …Our playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around us. We are all meant to shine… And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Business Any Birthdays in the house?!

Review frequently missed questions on assessment. Expectation this year – We have to move beyond the definition of the term. Team game using application side of sheet.

Objective Wildcats will support abstract ideas (L2) with concrete details (L1).

Write an paragraph (6 – 8 sentences), explaining the effect our choices have on our future. (Think about a time when you personally made a choice that affected your future.) In your paragraph, incorporate strong L 1 words (concrete nouns) and at least 3 different L2 words (abstract nouns).

Model Paragraph 9 years ago, I began a journey to growth by choosing to step out of a job of comfort into a job of the unknown. I had worked as a dance/drill team director for 21 years, 7 at Willis High School and 14 at Langham Creek High School. I knew the ins and outs of the job like running a productive practice, producing dynamic choreography that would please a football crowd and thrill competition judges managing 80 teenage girls at a time, day in and day out. I knew the job like the back of my hand my hand and had even experienced recognition at the district with my name on the Hall of Fame wall and state level, winning Director of the Year for the state of Texas. However, after 21 years of doing the same thing and being at the top of my field, I was ready for a challenge, a way to grow. Although it was a terrifying ordeal, I decided to change from teaching dance to instructing into the academic classroom teaching English.

Managing the English class tests my abilities even more so than the dance classroom because where in dance, the class is considered an elective, the English class is mandatory, meaning many students would prefer having a root canal over attending the English class. In addition, I had a tremendous amount of catching up to do challenge students with the rigor expected of a Cypress Woods High School student. Even though the early years of the change presented me with stress, doubt, and insecurity, today, I know that I have the strength, creativity and confidence that I would have never attained had I settled for comfort.

Balance of time to write paragraph.

Happy Trails to Clean Up! For team points….. Tell me one thing you have learned this week in English! 10

Tuesday – Do Now! 1. On your paper, I want you to make a T-Chart. 2. On the left, (under L1) I want you to write – Daniel Beatty. Daniel Beatty 1. 2. 3. L 1 L 2

“Knock, Knock” 1. On your paper, I want you to make a T-Chart. 2. On the left, I want you to write – Daniel Beatty. 3. On the right, as you listen, I want you to give me 3 abstract associations (nouns) that you can give me for this man, based on his story.

“Knock, Knock” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eYH0AFx6yI&noredirect=1

“Knock, Knock” follow-up 1. Share your ideas with a partner. 2. Share L2 words as a class. 3. Where was the “fork in the road” for this young man? 4. Did the choice he made make a difference?

Model Paragraph 9 years ago, I began a journey to growth by choosing to step out of a job of comfort into a job of the unknown. Even though the early years of the change presented me with stress, doubt, and insecurity, today, I know that I have the strength, creativity and confidence that I would have never attained had I settled for comfort.

How can we use this information to do some meaningful revision? 1. Highlight your concrete nouns in yellow. 2. Look at the concrete nouns that you used. Where did you use proper nouns? (review if necessary) The use of proper nouns are a key indicator that we are being very specific -- THIS IS GOOD! Check model essay.
