Dr Nadeen Brown Tyne Medical Practice, Haddington PLT 7th Feb 2017 Quality Improvement Projects: Capturing Consultation Types Dr Nadeen Brown Tyne Medical Practice, Haddington

Capturing Consultation Types A general practitioner, also called a GP or generalist, is a physician who does not specialize in one particular area of medicine. GPs provide routine health care and assess and treat many different conditions, including illnesses and injuries.

Capturing Consultation Types Why should we bother? To better explain what we do to those outside our profession To clarify to ourselves what we actually do (vs our “gut feelings”) To aid planning of services within practices To provide supportive evidence for planning of services at a CHP (or even government) level Thereby to actually improve patient care and reduce our workload

Capturing Consultation Types How should we go about it? more work! more to do in 10 mins useless data complicated systems a quick recording method simple user friendly system everyone using the same codes data relevant to politicians and GPs data that will make a difference

Capturing Consultation Types What we are doing at Tyne Buttons !

Capturing Consultation Types How do we pull the data out?

Recording Our Daily Activity Some examples of our data so far…… 3 week period (Mon 9th Jan – Fri 27th Jan) Practice population ~ 6,500 Total no of patient contacts (appt, visit, telephone, emergency) = 1464

Recording Our Daily Activity Tyne: number of doctors consulting each day AM PM Mon 5 Tues 4 3 Wed Thurs Fri

Recording Our Daily Activity Tyne: average numbers of patient contacts per doctor per day Booked surgery Plus (on average)… Morning Surgery 11 1-2 extras Visits 2 each Afternoon Surgery 1 extra Phone calls 4 each

Capturing Consultation Types Conclusion Does seem to be worthwhile so far Produces “real time” recording of daily activity by the clinician themselves Records type and number of problems Does not seem to prolong 10 min consults May be a tool for providing evidentiary data towards better managing resources and workload
