In it for good The Bristol Method Peter Mann Transport Director Bristol City Council, UK www.Bristol2015.co.uk/method

The Bristol Method is… A knowledge-transfer programme from Bristol’s year as European Green Capital A resource for people in other cities to use and apply the lessons that Bristol learned in becoming a more sustainable city Comprised of 28 modules, or chapters An easy-to-digest set of ‘how to’ guides on particular topics Generic advice and suggestions that each reader can adapt to their own situation

The Bristol Method includes how to… ...create a vision of a city’s future ...measure the sustainability of a city …cut the carbon footprint of a city’s buildings …create more resilient cities ...tackle food waste ...protect and enhance green spaces in a city ...set up a local currency ...grow the green economy ...use art to inspire change …promote renewable energy generation ...get more people riding bikes and walking …increase public transport use …create liveable communities …reduce traffic and its impacts

How to get more people riding bikes and walking Lead by example 20 mph / 30 kph speed limits Segregated cycle routes Rail and bus integration Cycle training and month-long bike loans

How to get more people riding bikes and walking Bristol to Bath Railway Path cycle route 13 miles off road commuter and leisure track Opened in 1986 - Sustrans Around 7000 daily users Walking/cycling conflict MAMIL commuters Community-led solution

How to increase public transport use Bus priority – whole corridor approach Real time information at stop and in your pocket High quality vehicles Smart and integrated ticketing Accessible and affordable

How to increase public transport use Improving the image of the bus and tackling air pollution Geo-fence technology trial Punctuality and reliability Partnership commitments

How to create liveable communities Safe speeds city wide “Making Sundays Special” Playing out Reclaiming streets for residents Children’s bike exchange

How to create liveable communities Street closures for major events Bristol Half Marathon/10k Sky Ride/Tour of Britain

How to reduce traffic and its impacts Understanding air pollution effects Recognise the wider benefits of less traffic Electric and other low emission vehicles Parking management Congestion charge??

How to reduce traffic and its impacts Huge take up of car clubs in Bristol Over 100 car club bays – 3 operators Complementary to public transport use

The challenge continues… The time bomb of inactivity Public health and transport working together Active travel is the “best buy” solution Find out more at… www.travelwest.info/essentialevidence

My challenge to you… What are the most effective ways of promoting a liveable community where you live? www.Bristol2015.co.uk/method
