The Counseling Center: Who Are We And What Do We Do? Rachel Boldman, M.S., LMHC Director, Stetson University Counseling Center

College Student Mental Health Psychology Today: Crisis HuffPo: Growing Rapidly Resilience Epidemic APA: Growing Concern Boston University: Critical Issue

Stetson Student Mental Health 2 NCHA Data Have felt more than average or tremendous amounts of stress within the last 12 months: Have felt so depressed that it was difficult to function within the last 12 months: Have received a diagnosis of anxiety and are RECEIVING TREATMENT within the last 12 months: 59.5% 41.4% 86.8% Top concerns in the Counseling Center: About 18% of our students took this survey, which is the most we’ve ever had take an NCHA assessment. We don’t have benchmark data yet for the first two statistics, for the third, we are above the national baseline from 2010, which was 78.9% diagnosed and receiving treatment. Stress Anxiety Relationship Problem (Specific)

Working Together to Foster Resilience A good example we hear a lot about students is that they are unable to bounce back from disappointment, especially with regards to their grades. I’d like you to think about, as you start this year, what you would have wanted to know from your Faculty as an undergraduate student? What are you currently doing to foster resilience? What are you doing to hinder resilience? (example from the Counseling Center—fostering dependence on our services). When was the last time you admitted to your class that you failed at something?

When Does a Student DEFINITELY Need Counseling? Anxiety interfering with their life (one or multiple domains) Significant changes in mood or behavior Hygiene Not getting out of bed/leaving room Suicidal or homicidal statements (needs evaluation right away) Kognito training is really helpful for getting you accustomed to having potentially awkward conversations about a student’s mental health, or your concern for them. Usually the default end of a scenario is “refer them to counseling” or “walk them to the counseling center.” But we need to keep in mind that some reacting is normal for college students. What we’re looking for in terms of who to definitely refer to the Counseling Center, we’re looking for students who are not coping normally with stressors, and who are having trouble with normal every day tasks. It NEVER hurts to refer to the Counseling Center.

The Counseling Center’s “No Excuses” Policy “The Counseling Center discourages student clients from missing any classes or required activities in order to attend a counseling session. The Counseling Center does not provide excuses for student clients who miss class(es) due to mental health issues/concerns. Student clients who miss class due to mental health concerns or crisis are encouraged to consult their syllabus and notify their faculty if they will/will not be able to attend class.  The Counseling Center staff may, in certain instances, provide a letter confirming attendance for a counseling session, but it is at the discretion of the faculty to determine when or if a student will be excused from class.” Basically, it’s up to you whether or not you excuse them. Occasionally we will, with the student’s permission, confirm that they were in our office, or that they are being seen for a particular issue, but we will never tell you whether or not the student should be excused. That is entirely up to you.
