OBSERVATION ASTRONOMY (II) Orientation on 2010 September 2 OBSERVATION ASTRONOMY (II) Second Part: Optical Spectroscopy Lecturer: Masateru Ishiguro (이시구로) TA: Ji-Beom Ham (함지범)
Self-Introduction Masateru Ishiguro (石黒 正晃) Assistant Professor at Department of Physics and Astronomy 2000 Doctor of Science, Kobe University 2001-2006 Researcher at the Institute of Space and Atronautical Science, 2004-2005 Visiting Astronomer at University of Hawaii 2005-2006 Postdoc Researcher at Seoul National University 2007-2008 BK Professor 2007-2008 Researcher at National Astronomical Observatory of Japan 2009- Assistant Professor at Seoul National University
Research Solar System Astronomy Interplanetary dust particles: Observations of zodiacal light, Dynamical Evolution Comets: Dust trail, Outbursts, Comet-Asteroid transition Asteroids: Dynamics, Collision, Space weathering TNOs, … Optical and Infrared Observation, and Developments of Observational Tools CCD imaging Near-IR imaging Polarimetry (Spectroscopy) Instrumentation of optical imager and infrared camera Operation of spacecraft
Plan In the first 1/3 part of the lecture, we will learn the basics of observational techniques of radio astronomy: For this, students will study the operation principle of radio telescopes and the calibration process of radio data. Then students are expected to make observations and data reduction by themselves using the radio telescopes in campus. The basic operational principle of interferometer and VLBI is also introduced. The second part is focused on optical spectroscopy: Students are supposed to study the fundamentals of the spectroscopy and its astronomical application through the lecture. We will put an emphasis on the practice using SNUO 24-inch telescope. In addition, TA will teach the data reduction technique of spectroscopic data using IRAF I also have plan to teach sophistication in the astronomical two-dimensional devices such as infrared array and charge-coupled device.
