Communication Technology Safety and Health

Monday – August 29, 2017 Recap Turn and talk with your shoulder partner about safety in the lab what you have learned this week. Be ready to share out. (10 minutes) I will be able to explain the purpose of safety in the work place and why it is important in the graphic communication industry.

Learning Objectives Recall the purpose of a plant safety and health program Explain t he importance of machine guards and personal protection Apply the safe handling of materials, tools, and equipment, a s well as proper techniques for lifting. Identify the correct handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals and other materials. Explain plans for fire prevention within a plant. Summarize an ergonomically correct computer workstation. Explain ways to reduce and eliminate waste f or environmental compliance.

Standards 05.0 Demonstrate safe and appropriate use of tools machines, and materials in communications technology. Last week recap The graphic communication industry may be confronted with many hazards in the course of performing their duties. These duties include: Hazards of a mechanical, chemical, flammable or electrical nature. It is vital that your know basic safety practices. Because of the wide variety of processes performed, the potential for injury, illness, or death always exists.

Safety & Health Program The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a division of the Department of Labor that sets and enforces occupational health and safety rules.

OSHA OSHA Regulates the Hazard Communication Standard known as the “Worker’s Right to Know Law”, which requires the employer to communicate information to workers about chemical hazards in the workplace.

OSHA To ensure the success of the safety and health program, management leadership is essential. Safe conditions depend on a constant vigilance for possible hazards.

Essential Question What are the four mechanisms that can cause serious injury in a plant. Explain each one. “I will be able to identify the hazards that are posed by reciprocating, rotating, ad sheering actions of various types of machinery in the industry.”

Tuesday – August 29, 2017 Turn and talk with your shoulder partner about the four hazardous mechanisms one will find in a graphic communication plant. Be ready to share out. (10 minutes)

Mechanical Hazards There are any on-the-job physical injuries are the result of mechanical hazards that can be controlled if: Machines are properly guarded. Energy isolating devices are locked out and tagged during maintenance. Workers properly use personal protective equipment Workers area trained to handle materials, tools and equipment safely.

Machine Guarding It is IMPORTANT to remember that Hazards are posed by the reciprocating, rotating, and sheering actions of various types of machinery.

Rotating Mechanisms/Machine Hazards The following mechanisms can cause serious injury. Rotating Mechanisms/Machine Hazards

Rotating Machine Parts Rotating motions create hazards at the point of operation and at the point where power or motion is being transmitted f rom one point to another. NEVER wear loose clothing, hair, ear buds, headphones and jewelry while working around machines. Even skin can cause severe injury. Rotating Machine Parts

Rotating Machine Parts Remember typical rotating mechanisms are: Spindles Flywheels Horizontal or vertical shafts Cams and collars

Machine Guards Protect parts of the human body from being electrocuted, cut, squashed, or hit by flying fragments. Protect the equipment from foreign objects. Metal and plastic are two materials commonly used as guards.

Two Types of Machine Guards Nip Guards – where two cylinders meet or come close to one another. Barrier Guards – keep a person out of the operation area but can be hinged or moved. When the guard is moved out of position, power is cut off, and machine will not run.

Essential Question Describe the general precautions one must take against harmful solvent vapors. “I will be able to describe the eight (8) precautions that must be taken against harmful solvent vapors.”

Volatile Organic Solvents (VOCs) Some of the most common organic solvents found in the industry are blanket and roller washes, fountain solutions, plate cleaners, glaze removers, degreasers, and film cleaners.

Fire Prevention Essential Question: Why should fire prevention be a priority? I will understand the importance of fire prevention in the work place.

Material Safety Data Sheet

Noise Unwanted and excessively loud noise is found in many industrial facilities. Excessive noise can lead to permanent hearing loss. Noise levels are measured in units called decibels (dBA). A reading of 90 dBA is the maximum allowable limit f or an eight-hour day. If reading exceeds 90 dBA personal hearing protection must be worn. Hearing protection devices include ear muffs, ear plugs, moldable inserts, and noise reducing headsets.

Noise Limits Read the Academic Link on page 54 and conduct a “sound check” on the sounds you are exposed to everyday. Do any of the sounds reach dangerous levels? Does wearing headphones/ear plugs help or hurt you?
