The Diversity of Life Chapter 1.3 Domains and Kingdoms The Diversity of Life Chapter 1.3

My Planet Diary- pg. 22 Why do you think that bee species outnumber mammal and bird species combined? The bees reproduce faster and do not need as much food or space to stay alive

How are organisms classified? Linnaeus classified organisms as plants or animals. Do you think he knew about microscopic organisms, such as bacteria? No, because microscopes had not been invented yet!

How are organisms classified? Organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on: -their cell type -ability to make food -# of cells in their bodies

3 Domains Bacteria Unicellular prokaryotes (unicellular organisms whose cells lack a nucleus) Nucleic acids (DNA) are not in a nucleus Some autotrophs, some heterotrophs

3 Domains 2. Archaea Unicellular prokaryotes Live in harsh conditions Some autotrophs, some heterotrophs Different chemical makeup and cell structure than bacteria

3 Domains 3. Eukarya Eukaryotes (organisms with cells that contain nuclei) Divided into 4 kingdoms: protists, fungi, plants, animals

Protist Kingdom -Sometimes called the “odds and ends” kingdom because protists vary so much -Some autotrophs, some heterotrophs -Most are unicellular, but some (like seaweed) are multicellular

Fungi Kingdom -Mushrooms, molds, and mildew -Most are multicellular, but some (like yeast) are unicellular -Mostly found on land -Heterotrophs (decomposers: feed by absorbing nutrients from dead or decaying organisms)

Plant Kingdom -Multicellular eukaryotes -Autotrophs -Provide food for most heterotrophs

Animal Kingdom -Multicellular eukaryotes -Heterotrophs -Have different adaptations that allow them to locate food, capture it, eat it, and digest it

Apply It! Page 24 There are nuclei present. Protists Fungi Plants Animals 2. You can count more than one cell. 3. The organism cannot make its own food. 4. The organism gets nutrients from dead organisms. 5. Other members of this kingdom can be unicellular.

To which domains do only prokaryotes belong? Review Questions To which domains do only prokaryotes belong? Bacteria and Archaea How could domain Eukarya be further divided? Into the kingdoms Protists, Fungi, Plants, and Animals

What 3 characteristics can a protist share with a plant? Review Questions What 3 characteristics can a protist share with a plant? Cells contain a nucleus (eukaryotes), are multicellular, and are autotrophs

BrainPOP! Kingdoms

To which domain and kingdom do you belong? Domain: eukarya Kingdom: animal To which domain and kingdom does this organism belong? Domain: eukarya Kingdom: fungi
