SELEP Skills Strategy In October, SAG members agreed that this should be an employer led concise, ambitious vision and articulation of shared priorities To be used for lobbying, funding and conveying the importance of the SELEP area To be endorsed by Sector Skills Councils and industry bodies To have an under-pinning Evidence Base drawing on existing information To include best practice and case studies To include a consultation and input from partners

Progress Informal consultation has begun – presentations and input from Kent and East Sussex provider networks, Essex College Principals, universities, employers and schools, industry bodies (i.e. CITB) Online consultation to go on SELEP website in Dec/Jan for employers, educators, individuals, partners Evidence base underway – analysing vacancies, skills needed by employers and future growth Essex Evidence Base best practice model and used to create careers factsheets

Progress – emerging headlines Lower than average skills levels- 31% with Level 4+ compared to 37.1% nationally Significant numbers with no qualifications – 195,000 people Nearly 200,000 people on out of work benefits – 133,000 on ESA and benefits Growing need for technical skills – 70% of ‘hard to fill’ vacancies are due to skills shortages Growth in apprenticeships with considerably more required – 32,240 starts in 2015/16 and nearly 250,000 15-19 year olds in this LEP area

Future plans LEP Skills Strategy by April 2017 FE Area Review reports and recommendations for all LEP areas by May 2017 More employers and schools engaging in Careers Enterprise Adviser Network Best practice sharing and events Skills Capital Showcase event ESF £49.3m successfully delivering apprenticeships, employment programmes and increased skills Further £20m ESF tenders published by February 2017 Skills Advisory Group new members in place, strengthening links with VCS and universities

Local Growth Fund update

Capital Programme Management Growth Deal summary £488m LGF investment Matched with over £400m local funding 75 capital investment projects On track to deliver the 23,000 new homes and 45,000 new jobs committed to through the Growth Deal. By the end of 2016/17 it is forecast that our total LGF spend will amount to: £145.384m – excluding retained schemes £151.997m – including retained schemes To date, 58 projects have been approved by Accountability Board and work is well underway to deliver them. During 2016/17 a further 15 projects are expected to be completed.
