Putri Nor Suad Megat Mohd Nor And Suhaiza Ismail EFFECT OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: EVIDENCE FROM MALAYSIA Putri Nor Suad Megat Mohd Nor And Suhaiza Ismail Department Of Accounting, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia.

Presentation Outline Introduction Motivation of the Study Objectives of the Study Literature Review Methodology Findings and Discussion Implications Limitations and Suggestions for Future Research

Introduction Objective of internship - to expose students to the real accounting work life. Benefits: increase the understanding of students concerning real business, Better able to evaluate theoretical points in classroom improve the students’ self-development and soft skills, and, ultimately, improve their subsequent academic performance MOHE, 2006 - requirement for accounting students in all public universities in Malaysia to undertake an internship program for 6 months. Requirements - minimum credit of 90 hours, and must pass the Taxation 1 and Auditing 1 courses

MOTIVATION OF THE STUDY Limited literature concerning the impact of internship on academic performance from developing countries Extends the existing literature on internship by investigating its impact on performance based on gender

Objectives of the Study 1. To investigate the effect of industrial training on academic performance of accounting students in Malaysia (overall & specific courses). 2. To analyze the impact of internship on academic performance based on gender.

Internship and Academic Performance Literature Review Internship and Academic Performance Koehler (1974) - overall academic performance of the students (CGPA) improved after internship programme. Knechel & Snowball (1987); Arnold & Garland (1990) - no significant difference in the performance between the intern and non-intern groups. English and Koeppen (1993) – interns GPA increased, non-interns decreased.

Gender and Academic Performance Gomez et al. (2004), Morrison et al. (2005) and Woodfield et al. (2006) - female students performed better than the male students. Jochem et al. (1996) & De Vita (2002) - insignificant difference in the performance of male and female students. Gracia and Jenkins (2003) - female students performed significantly better than the males in 2nd year but no significant difference in the 3rd year. Carpenter and Friar (1993), Jackling and Anderson (1998), and Gammie et al. (2003) - no significance gender differences in the performance of accounting students.

Gap in the literature Most of the prior studies were carried out in developed countries, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States Lack of studies assessed academic performance in terms of the average academic result There is a scarcity of research that analysed the impact of internship on academic performance based on gender.

Hypotheses: H1: There is a significant increase in the overall performance of students after the internship programme. H2: There is a significant increase in the performance of female students after the internship programme. H3: There is a significant increase in the performance of male students after the internship programme. H4: There is no significant difference in the academic results between male and female students.

Question Distribution & Data Collection: Methodology Research instrument: GPA, CGPA, and the results for fundamental auditing, advanced auditing, fundamental taxation and advanced taxation courses. Question Distribution & Data Collection: 188 students who did internship in Semester 2, 2012/2013 Data Analysis: Paired-samples t-tests - to examine the impact of internship on performance (overall & specific courses) and on gender. SPSS software using mean score and standard deviation.

Findings and Discussion Consistent with the findings reported by Koehler (1974) in terms of CGPA, English and Koeppen (1993) for GPA, and Knechel and Snowball (1987) for audit result In contrast with the findings of Knechel and Snowball (1987), and Arnold and Garland (1990). H1 supported H2 and H3 are Consistent with the results by Gracia and Jenkins (2003), Gomez et al. (2004), Morrison et al. (2005), and Woodfield et al. (2006). In contradicts with the results of Carpenter and Friar (1993), Jackling and Anderson (1998), and Gammie et al. (2003). H4 not supported

Malaysian Ministry of Education Implications To extend the compulsory requirement for internship to private universities To introduce an internship programme to other degree programmes Malaysian Ministry of Education to obtain as much exposure as they can when they undergo industrial training Students re-examine the most suitable time during the study period for the students to undergo internship emphasize the importance and benefits of industrial training to students in class. Lecturers

Limitations & Suggestions FOR FUTURE RESEARCH Only examined a batch of students who went for industrial training during a particular academic semester. Not considered other factors that could have affected the academic performance of accounting students. To examine several batches of students who underwent internship during various academic semesters. To include other factors, such as prior performance, size of the firm that the students are attached to during internship, learning style and personality traits.
