Turn and talk with your neighbors to discuss the importance of the Mayflower Compact How did it influence later government in America?

Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact, signed by 41 English colonists on the ship Mayflower on November 11, 1620, was the first written framework of government established in what is now the United States. Each signer promised to obey the laws passed “for the general good of the colony” The Mayflower Compact was a key step in the development of a representative, democratic government in the America

Over the past few lessons we’ve discussed the first three English Colonies, and have examined their lives in America Today we will compare their successes and failures. I will present you with a slideshow of pictures that relate to each of the Colonies discussed, and will ask if you can identify which Colony relates to each picture and why 

Jamestown Plymouth Roanoke Think…..Why they wanted to come to America, what hardships they faced, if they were able to succeed, and their relationships with the Natives.

Independent Practice Out of the three colonies we have discussed, which Colony would you want to be a part of and why? State at least three details to support your claim.

Group Work You will break into groups and be given a “Colonies Report Card”. Each group will be give a worksheet with each of the three colonies listed, as well as different categories such as; location, food supply, economy, relations with Natives, and leaders. You will assign a grade (A-F) for each colony to determine if they were successful or not.

Closure What are the reasons the English came to settle in America?

Homework Pick one of the three Colonies discussed in class and research information at home on your computer or phone. Write one paragraph detailing any new information you learned to be shared with the class tomorrow.
