Oscar Wilde Oscar Wilde was an Anglo-Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and critic. He is regarded as one of the greatest playwrights of the Victorian Era. In his lifetime he wrote nine plays, one novel, and numerous poems, short stories, and essays.

Wilde’s family Oscar was born in a family of successful people. His mother Lady Jane Francesca Wilde was a successful journalist and poet. His father, William Wilde was also a gifted writer (he wrote books on folklore and archeology) and a leading eye and ear surgeon.

Future playwright Oscar Wilde was the second among three children in their family – he had an elder brother and a younger sister, who died at the age of ten.

Early years of Oscar Wilde Oscar studied at Portora Royal School and then in Trinity College in Dublin. He continued his studies at Magdalene College in Oxford, where he became the member of new aesthetic movement ‘L’art pour l’art’. Studying in Oxford, Oscar Wilde won the Newdigate Prize for his poem ‘Ravenna’.

Wilde’s life and work He graduated in 1878 and in 1879 he moved to London with a dream and plans to establish the career of serious writer. Two years later Oscar Wilde publishes his collection of poetry ‘Poems’.

During the next three years Wilde worked as an art reviewer, read lectures in Canada, the United States, Ireland and Britain. In 1883 he even lived in Paris.

In 1884 Wilde married Constance Lloyd, who was a daughter of Horace Lloyd – wealthy Queen’s Counsel. Their couple had two sons – Cyril and Vyvyan.

Wilde wrote fairy-stories for his children and published them in a book entitled ‘The Happy Prince and Other Tales’ in 1888.

In 1895 Wilde sued the father of Lord Alfred Douglas who accused him of homosexuality, but his case was unsuccessful. Oscar himself was arrested and sentenced for the crime of sodomy to two years of hard labor.

The last years of Oscar’s life Oscar Wilde was released in 1897, and spent the rest of his life wandering Europe, living in cheap hotels and staying with friends. On November 30, 1900 Wilde died in a cheap Paris hotel of cerebral meningitis.

In paris is open to visitors grave Oscar Wilde In paris is open to visitors grave Oscar Wilde. Strange ritual kisses cover the grave of Oscar Wilde appeared in the 1990s. During his lifetime he was twice sentenced to prison for kissing a man. Therefore Wilde himself tied a manifestation of love with the symbol of danger or death.

Interesting facts: Wilde had photographic memory Oscar Wilde was fond of languages. He learned and practiced German, French, Italian and Ancient Greek. Last words of Wilde were «My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or another of us has got to go.»

My favorite work of Oscar Wilde and quotes from books The first literary composition that I read was a The Picture of Dorian Gray. This amazing book. I went to a performance of this artwork and it was startling!

Oscar Wilde made his life a novel: «I was a man who stood in symbolic relations to the art and culture of my age. I had realised this for myself at the very dawn of my manhood, and had forced my age to realise it afterwards.»

Is that Wilde was trying to prove with his life: «The artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim. The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.

The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography. Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.

They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty. There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.»
