Or boundary data available on Nottingham Insight Geographies Or boundary data available on Nottingham Insight

Geographies A number of different boundaries are available on Nottingham Insight. This presentation will explain the different boundaries and how they sit together.

Objectives Explain the key boundaries Explain how the different boundaries nestle together Which boundaries are specific to Nottingham City Explain larger geographies available through to the smaller level geographies Explain how data on Insight is aggregated to different geographies

Key Boundaries The three main boundaries used on Nottingham Insight are District, Ward and Super Output Areas.

Key geographies Ward LSOA District

District Level In Nottinghamshire there are 7 districts:- Ashfield Bassetlaw Broxtowe Gedling Mansfield Newark & Sherwood Nottingham City Rushcliffe

Wards Wards vary considerably in population size from 1,600 to 21,400 people with an average size of 5,700 people. If you are looking to use wards as standard comparable areas, precaution should be used.

Wards Wards are represented at local authority level by councillors, and the availability of statistical information for wards has considerable importance for local government.

Wards On Nottingham Insight, all Census data is displayed using the 2011 wards. It is worth noting that Newark and Sherwood, Bassetlaw and Mansfield have changed their ward boundaries since the 2001 Census. Datasets for these wards are provided on a best fit for the ward.

Wards There are 192 wards within Nottinghamshire Within the City of Nottingham, there are 20 wards.

Output Areas Output Areas were designed for the 2001 Census to enable data to be released for small, comparable areas below ward level. A small number of revisions were made in 2011 to take into account changes in the population and to ensure they remained of comparable size. There are 3,609 Output Areas in Nottinghamshire with an average of 128 households per area.

Output Areas Output Areas are mostly used to produce Census data for small areas. Other data is generally released for larger areas to maintain confidentiality. Output Areas provide the ‘building blocks’ for creating these larger areas.

Lower Super Output Areas Super Output Areas are made up from groups of Output Areas and are generally the smallest area for which data is available There are 679 Lower Super Output Areas in Nottinghamshire. (Average 1,500 households)

Lower Super Output Areas They provide a basis for comparison throughout the country because the areas have similar numbers of households. There are 32,844 Super Output Areas in England and 679 in Nottinghamshire, of which 182 are within the City of Nottingham.

Middle Super Output Areas These boundaries were created from the 2001 census and contain similar numbers of households. The 138 Middle Super Output Areas have an average of 3,300 households each. They are built from groups of Lower Super Output Areas

Middle Super Output Areas Middle Super Output Areas are not widely used as they are generally of a similar size to wards. They are mainly used when releasing data for a smaller area would risk the confidentiality of the data, or when larger areas of comparable size are needed.

Middle Super Output Areas On Nottingham Insight a number of datasets are available at MSOA. For example:- Births and deaths Disability living allowance claimants Country of birth Pupil absences

Nottingham City Boundaries The following boundaries are specific to Nottingham City and are included on Nottingham Insight.

Area Committees Specific to Nottingham City. Eight Area Committees covering the whole City each comprising two or three adjoining wards. Area Committees enable ward councillors, along with local residents and other stakeholders, to influence what happens in each area either through direct decision making or consultation.

Localities Specific to Nottingham City Based on Area Committees 3 localities: North; South and Central
