Venn Diagram Using the Venn Diagram I passed out, you will Compare and Contrast Direct and Representative (Indirect) Democracy.

Voting Exercise For this exercise you will be voting on what type of pizza that class will get as a reward for being spotlight for 9 weeks!! Choices: Pepperoni Cheese Pineapple and Ham The two classes representatives will step out side and vote for you. While they are voting outside, we will vote as a class in the room.

Reviewing the results Were the results the same or different? Which one was an example of a direct democracy? Which one was a representative democracy? Imagine that I am the owner of Pepperoni Kazaam and I want my pepperoni to be chosen by the representatives. What could I do? Is a direct democracy possible in a population of 320 million? What about individual rights? Is it fair that the representatives choose for us?

Bell Work, Unit 3, # 5, Oct. 31st Government often regulates economic systems and countries often trade with each other. What is economics? How can government and economics impact each other? Why do countries trade with one another?

Think about fuel for a car! Where does it come from?

Fuel Is it a non-renewable or renewable resource?

Non-renewable That makes it a SCARCE RESOURCE Scarce resources are often more valuable. The government, based on economics, determines where we buy oil and how much it’s going to cost us to purchase fuel for our cars.

Bell Work, Unit 3, #6, Nov. 1st What is the difference between a traditional economy and a market economy? What is a scarce resource?

Notes Geographers look at economic systems at four different levels. Primary Industry: use natural resources to make money. Ex. Farming Secondary Industry: use raw materials to produce or manufacture something new. Tertiary Industry: provide services to people and businesses. Quaternary Industry: process and distribute information. Skilled workers research and gather information.

6th period https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ez10ADR_gM

Notes Goods versus services Increase versus decrease Scarce versus available Supply versus demand

Supply Versus Demand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_w105aWPNY

Wants versus needs Wants Needs

Questions! You want a new chair. Where do you go to buy it? How did it get there? What is it made of? Who made it? How are you going to pay for it?

Let’s review for a moment! If you want the chair – Someone is going to sell you the chair Someone had to send the chair to the store Someone had to make the chair Someone had to design the chair Someone had to cut down the tree Someone had to plant the tree

This is called LABOR A HUMAN RESOURCE

Wait, we’re not done… A computer was used to sell the chair (cash register) A truck was used to ship the chair Tools and machines were used to build the chair Machines/Saws were used to cut the tree down and cut into lumber….

These TOOLS… ARE CALLED… CAPITAL RESOURCES

One minute… YOU BUY THE CHAIR

YOU are…

The CONSUMER

Hold your horses…

The builders of the chair…

Are….. Wait for it…

PRODUCERS

But what about building the chair? This is a SERVICE The carpenter, by building the chair, is providing a service; he is satisfying our needs

So, let’s review… What is a resource? What is a consumer? What is a producer? What is a service? What is a good? Who makes up a market economy?
