Types of Government

Bell-ringer 8/8 What is citizen participation like in these types of governments: autocratic, oligarchic, and democratic. Give an example of a country that has that type of citizen participation.

Oligarchy With this type of government, a few people run the government and can do anything they want. Ex: China, North Korea

Democratic Republic/ Representative Democracy People vote for the people who run the government and make laws that the citizens want. Ex: United States

Dictatorship One person in power and usually takes control by force and does anything he/she wants. Ex: Syria (Bashar al-Assaad)

Theocracy A religious leader is the ruler of the government and is not limited in power. Ex: Vatican City

Absolute Monarchy The ruler inherits their power from a relative with no limitations on what he or she can do. Ex: Qatar

Communisim Founded by Karl Marx, who believed that all property should be community owned, the government controls everything. Ex: Cuba, Laos, Vietnam

Direct Democracy The citizens vote directly on everything- making laws, making changes in government, etc. Ex: United States

Constitutional Monarchy The ruler inherits his/her power from a relative but is limited by constitution or laws. Ex: United Kingdom
