RAJASTHAN ALUMNI MEENU BHAMBHANI Masters in Disability & Human Development University of Illinois at Chicago, USA Meenu belongs to a middle class Rajasthani family. With mobility problems caused by post polio paralysis, she had to face many financial and social barriers to gain access to education. In spite of these obstacles she managed to complete her graduation from the University of Rajasthan and got involved in working on issues of disability and persons with disability. Prior to her selection as a Ford Fellow Meenu had held the post of Assistant Commissioner (Disabilities) with the Department of Social Welfare, Govt. of Rajasthan. She had also served as a Convener of Women’s Committee in Disabled Peoples’ International. She is currently working as a Manager with Community Initiatives, MPHASIS in Bangalore.

RAJASTHAN ALUMNI DEEPAK KUMAR YOGI Masters in Development Managament Asian Institute of Management, Philippines Deepak faced severe financial obstacles in accessing education in his early years. However, his determination saw him through and he completed his Bachelors degree in Sanskrit. He spent 7 years working with the National Literacy Mission in Rajasthan. Deepak’s deep social commitment towards the socio-economic empowerment of rural women led him to form women self help groups to create awareness of evils of alcoholism and drug abuse. He founded the Women’s Empowerment Center in Rajasthan which works in several areas, particularly micro-finance.

RAJASTHAN ALUMNI ABDUL LATEEF USTA Masters in Conservation of Fine Art University of Northumbria, UK Abdul Lateef Usta was born into a family of artists involved in the dying ‘usta’ art of embossing in gold on leather and wood. His deep interest in keeping alive art and craft led him to get involved in renovating paintings and gold embossing at the Junagarh fort in Rajasthan. Here he was also involved in training local youth in ‘usta’ in order to promote and conserve it. Through the fellowship he chose to pursue his dream to learn more about art conservation and participated in a summer project at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He is currently the Curator of the Jawahar Kala Kendra which is dedicated to promoting Art conservation.

RAJASTHAN ALUMNI NEKRAM UPADHYAY Diploma in Disability & Human Development University of Illinois at Chicago, USA Nekram grew up in rural Rajasthan and had to overcome many barriers in accessing education as well as employment due to his disability which affected his overall mobility. He completed a post graduate diploma in computer application from Rajasthan. He has provided inputs to architects for building barrier free environment for disabled persons. In addition Nekram also instructed disabled persons in the field of sports and won the gold medal in National Abilympics-2002. His Masters project at UIC was to set up a Department of Assistive Technology, which he did at the Indian Spinal Injuries Center. He currently works there as a Rehabilitation Engineering Technologist.

IFP India 2009 : Eligibility Criteria Indian nationals who are : currently living AND working in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar , Jharkhand, Orissa, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh or Jammu & Kashmir have at least 55% in BA or MA degree have 3 years’ full-time & relevant work experience FORD FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM 26
