Presentation transcript:

Mr. Wegley’s Science Class Be careful and safe so we can learn and have fun !!

Safety Rules for Science Lab One of the first things a scientist learns is that working in the laboratory can be an exciting experience. The laboratory can also be quite dangerous if proper safety rules are not followed at all times. Things can spill, break, and even catch fire. Safety in the science classroom is an important part of the scientific process. It is your responsibility to: Prepare yourself for a safe year in the laboratory. Read over the following safety rules. Make sure you understand each rule. Ask your teacher to explain any rules you are unsure of. Sign and date the bottom of this sheet.

Safe Working Habits Never run, push, play or fool around in the laboratory. Never eat or drink in the laboratory. Keep your work area uncluttered, clean, and dry. Follow all written and verbal instructions exactly. Never perform activities that are not authorized by your teacher. Obtain permission before “experimenting” on your own. Never handle any equipment unless you have specific permission. Report all accidents, spills, or breakage to the teacher immediately – no matter how minor. Locate and learn to use all laboratory safety equipment (fire blanket, eye wash station, etc.)

Dress Code Tie back long hair. Roll long sleeves above the wrist. Remove or secure loose-fitting sleeves and jewelry. These can get in the way, cause spills, or catch fire. No sandals or open toed shoes. Wear lab apron and goggles when working with open flames and chemicals.

Using Glassware Safely Never use chipped, cracked, or broken glassware. Tell your teacher and show them of this glassware. Always be careful when carrying glassware to and from your work area (two hands!) Never place broken glass in the trash can. Place broken glass in the broken glass container.

Handling Chemicals Never touch or taste substances in the laboratory except as directed by your teacher. Never smell substances without specific instructions. Avoid inhaling fumes directly, use the “wafting” method. If you spill any chemicals on your skin, wash with running water. If chemicals splash in your eyes, use the eye wash bottle. Use proper containers for disposal of chemicals.

Using Heat and Fire Safety Never leave an alcohol lamp or other hot object unattended. Never reach over an exposed flame. Use tongs or gloves to handle equipment that has been heated. Never look into a container that is being heated. When heating in an open container, point the open end of the container away from yourself and others.

End-of-Experiment Rules Thoroughly clean your work area and glassware. Don’t dispose of materials in the sink unless instructed to do so. Return all equipment to its proper place. Wash your hands after labs and before leaving class.

Lab Jobs When we do a lab, we will be put into lab table/groups of 4 students and each student will be given a job. Lead Scientist- Read lab Recorder- make sure all data is collected and everyone copies it down Material Manager- collects and returns all equipment Reporter- share information with class
