KKK—Ku Klux Klan Some Facts @ Klan Founded as a social club for Confederate Vets Pulaski, TN—1866—By 1868 most every southern state had a chapter—some northern too! Violence associated with Klan. Targeted mainly Ex Slaves. Have moved their attention to those they feel are “Un-American Blacks, Catholics, Jews…Immigrants

Laws against Prejudice: “Enforcement Acts: 1871 1870-71—Targeted Klan activity Federal supervision of elections Federal troops used against Klan Has it helped? Do we see the rise of the Klan in today’s world? When does the Klan seem to rise up?

Other Troubles in America: Besides Klan, Trouble in Whitehouse Lincoln Shot and Killed! Johnson impeached! Two terms with Grant—Even Republicans wanted him out! Elections of 1872 and 1876 shows signs of struggle in America Election of 1876 effectively ends Reconstruction!

Republican Party in Trouble: 1870’s US Grant in Trouble Scandals in administration: “Credit Mobilier”—skimmed profits off of a RR contract. Grant…a great military leader. Trouble for the Republican Party Other scandals: IRS collectors took bribes from whiskey distillers Sec of War took bribes for favors Grant decides not to run in 1876!

Election of 1872 Liberal Republicans want Grant out…so did Democrats. United together and pulled for Horace Greeley (Editor of NY Paper) Greeley loses anyway… exhausted from campaign, he dies just weeks after election was finished.

Election of 1876 “End of Reconstruction” Republicans: Rutherford Hayes (Governor of Ohio) Democrats: Samuel Tilden (Governor of New York) Huge Controversy! Tilden wins popular vote—loses electoral vote by One! 20 Electoral votes in question! Republicans dominated the investigation…looked into it, and gave election to Hayes. (First time candidate wins popular vote and loses)

Democrats Challenge Ruling! “Compromise of 1877” Democrats would accept ruling of commission if: 1) Federal troops moved out of the last two states they were in. 2) Federally funded RR from TX to West coast to help with Southern economy. 3) Conservative Southerners appointed to the cabinet.

Question to Ask: Was Reconstruction a Success? What can we name as “positive” out of Reconstruction Policies?

Negative Points of Reconstruction: Rise of Discrimination across America: Groups like the Klan Further split of North and South Corruption grows: Carpetbaggers, Scalawags, Government corruption. Loss of “Two party” system of government Economic problems Others?

Positive Points to Reconstruction: Rebuilding of South Civil Rights Amendments End of Slavery-Rise of Blacks rights Growth of schools and hospitals Public works programs Unified families Expansion westward—industrialization Blacks holding office: Hiram Revels
