THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATTITUDES (Matt. 5:1-12) I. “BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT (v. 3)” A. Man’s View: “Blessed are the strong, the wise, the intelligent, the rich… for the world is theirs!” B. Bible View: 1. God hates arrogance (Pr. 6:16-17f,). 2. Pride deceives (Pr. 30:11-14). 3. God rewards humility (2 Kings 5:1, 9-14; Jer. 9:23-24).

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATTITUDES (Matt. 5:1-12) II. “BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN (v. 4)” A. Man’s View: “Emphasize the positive, eliminate the negative! Don’t make me feel bad! Don’t judge me at all!” B. Bible View: 1. If you love sin, God condemns you (2 Th. 2:11-12; Lk. 6:25b)! 2. We should weep over sin (Js. 4:8-10; 1 Cor. 5:1-4f). 3. Purity begins within (Mt. 23:26; Pr. 4:23; 14:14). 2. Sincerity alone NOT enough (Jn. 4:24, 17:17). 3. Seeing God is connected to purity (1 Jn. 3:2-3).

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATTITUDES (Matt. 5:1-12) VII. “BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS (v. 9)” A. Man’s View: Unity in diversity! B. Bible View: 1. Called to peace by the gospel, the gospel is doctrine (Col. 3:15; 2 Th. 2:14; 1 Tim. 1:10-11) 2. Peace must be actively pursued, connected to righteousness (1 Pet. 3:10-12).

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT: BEATTITUDES (Matt. 5:1-12) VIII. “BLESSED ARE THEY THAT HAVE BEEN PERSECUTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (v. 10-12) A. Man’s View: 1. Retaliate! or Avoid all conflict! 2. Persecution always proves righteousness! B. Bible View: 1. Faithful will face it (2 Tim. 3:12; Jn. 17:4). 2. Bless those that curse (Rom. 12:19-21). 3. Not always proof (Acts 18:12-17). 4. If persecuted for right… (Mt. 5:12).
