Heaven and Hell Introduction From the very beginning, the Bible says that the Devil exists. 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (Gen 3:1, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 1 Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel. (1 Chron 21:1, NIV) 6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them. (Job 1:6, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 7 The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it.” (Job 1:7, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 8 …Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8, NIV) This cosmic battle started before the creation of the world when Satan and his accomplices rebelled against the Almighty.

Heaven and Hell It’s a place of darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, a place where God is not. They make war against those who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus (Rev 12:17).

Heaven and Hell When Satan couldn’t become a god himself, he turned his wrath against God’s children. I am making such a big deal about the Devil to show you that a cosmic-earthly rebellion has occurred.

Heaven and Hell 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; (2 Pet 2:4, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home-these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. (Jude 6, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Cor 5:10, NIV) 14 …Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. (2 Cor 11:14, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. (Matt 13:47-48, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matt 13:49-50, NIV) 51 “have you understood all these things?” (Matt 13:51, NIV)

Heaven and Hell If justice exists, then justice demands there be a Hell. Jesus says Hell is eternal and real. It’s eternal punishment (Matt 25:48). It’s eternal judgment (Hebrews 6:2). It’s eternal fire (Matt 18:8).

Heaven and Hell Where the fire is never quenched (Mark 9:44). 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. (Matt 18:8, NIV)

Heaven and Hell Hell is so bad because you’re separated from God! First, your relevance. Gehenna a deep valley used as a garbage dump.

Heaven and Hell Second, your relief. Hell is a place of banishment! 23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. (Luke 16:23, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ (Luke 16:24, NIV)

Heaven and Hell You don’t want to go there! Third, your reconciliation. In Hell God no longer intervenes. God is gone forever!

Heaven and Hell 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power (2 Thess 1:8-9, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. (2 Thess 1:10, NIV)

Heaven and Hell Even though we rebelled against God like Adam and Eve, God still sent Jesus. This is awesome news to those of us who know God and have obeyed the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Heaven and Hell 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 38 Peter replied, “, Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38, NIV)

Heaven and Hell So to those who live by faith, God has reserved an eternal place of rest. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

Heaven and Hell 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2-3, NIV) 43 …“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thess 4:16, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. (1 Thess 4:16-17, NIV)

Heaven and Hell Conclusion 13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” (Rev 13:14, NIV)

Heaven and Hell 38 I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39, NIV)
