The First Epistle of St. Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians The City of Thessalonica: + It was the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia. It was the home of Alexander, the first son of Antipater and he named it after his wife, Thessalonic, who was a sister of Alexander the Great. Today, it is known as Thessaloniki, or Salonica. + The city was the second after Constantinople in terms of trade. It had lots of Jews who were mostly traders. The Church at Thessalonica: + St Paul visited Thessalonica during his 2nd missionary trip, accompanied by Silas and Timothy, as he was leaving Philippi. This was around the year A.D. 52:

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews” (Acts 17:1) + St. Paul went first to the Jews, whom he preached for three Sabbaths from the Scriptures, but it seems that he was not that successful among the Jews for very few received the faith. So, most of the church’s members were pagans and devout Greeks, and among those who believed were leading women: “Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying: This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ” (Acts 17:2-3)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians + The unbelieving Jews became jealous and created an uproar in the city and stirred up their persecution against him. Therefore it became necessary to send Paul and Silas away secretly by night to Berea. - St. Paul refers to the persecution he and the Church at Thessalonica faced: “And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 1:6) “That no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this. For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know” (1 Thessalonians 3:3-4)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians + It seems that this was the only trip St Paul made to Thessalonica in which he founded the Church there: - For after St. Paul aimed for Berea sent by the brothers, he tried to return again to Thessalonica to keep his fight there, but he was prevented: “Therefore we wanted to come to you—even I, Paul, time and again—but Satan hindered us” (1 Thessalonians 2:18) - St Paul, therefore, decided to send Timothy in his place, who was with him in Athens, to confirm the believers and to strengthen them on bearing the troubles: “Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God,…

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith” (1 Thessalonians 3:1-2) - After Thessalonica, St. Paul went to Corinth where he met Timothy who was carrying good news, and then he wrote the epistle: “But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you” (1 Thessalonians 3:6) Time and Place of Writing: + The 1st epistle to the Thessalonians is considered to be the first epistle St. Paul wrote, and most of the scholars claim it also to be the first…

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians book written in the New Testament. St. Paul wrote it around the latter part of the year 52 A.D., during his 2nd missionary trip. + It was written out of Corinth, where he was accompanied by Silas and Timothy. Purpose of Writing: 1. To Praise them for their Steadfastness under Persecution: “So that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything” (1 Thessalonians 1:7-8)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians 2. To Instruct them Concerning Holy Living: “Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God” (1 Thessalonians 4:1) 3. To Comfort them by Talking about the Second Coming of the Lord Christ: “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God… And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians Theme of the Epistle: ‘The Second Coming of Christ is Our Hope’: - This book is unique in that every chapter ends with a reference to the second coming of the Lord Christ. - The Lord’s Second Coming in the Epistle: 1. Christ’s Second Coming is a motive for change and personal renewal: “And how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come” (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians 2. It is a motive for an honest service: “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy” (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20) 3. It is a cause for an increasing love: “And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints” (1 Thessalonians 3:12-13) 4. It is a source for our comfort:

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14) 5. It is a call for watching: “For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say: Peace and safety! then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape... Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober” (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3,6) 6. It is a motive for holiness:

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24) Contents: I. Introduction: (Ch. 1) 1. Salutation: “Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 1:1)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians 2. Thanksgiving to God for their Faith, Love and Service: “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-4) “For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake” (1 Thessalonians 1:5) II. Founding of the Thessalonian Church: (Chs. 2-3) 1. St. Paul’s Service and his Parenthood:

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “We were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict” (1 Thessalonians 2:2) “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts” (1 Thessalonians 2:4) “But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children. So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us” (1 Thessalonians 2:7-8) “You are witnesses, and God also, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:10)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “As you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory” (1 Thessalonians 2:11-12) 2. The Zeal of the Thessalonians and their Sufferings: “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13) “For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans” (1 Thessalonians 2:14)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians 3. Longing to See them Again: “But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire” (1 Thessalonians 2:17) 4. Sending Timothy in his Place: “For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain” (1 Thessalonians 3:5) 5. The Good News Timothy Carried Back to St. Paul:

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “Therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith. For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 3:7-8) “For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?” (1 Thessalonians 3:9-10) III. Instructions and Commands: (Chs. 4-5) 1. A Plea for Purity: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain…

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5) “Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 4:8) 2. To Grow in Love: “But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more” (1 Thessalonians 4:9-10)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians 3. Various Exhortations: “That you also aspire to lead a quiet life” (1 Thessalonians 4:11) “But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation” (1 Thessalonians 5:8) “And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13) “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all” (1 Thessalonians 5:15)

The 1st Epistle to the Thessalonians “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) “Do not quench the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19) “Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22) IV. Conclusion and Benediction: (Ch. 5) “Brethren, pray for us, greet all the brethren with a holy kiss” (1 Thessalonians 5:25-26)
