SDUSD Immigrant Students Over 50,000 students speak a language other than English at home 10% of all SDUSD students are foreign-born San Diego Unified serves approximately 30,000 immigrant students. These students make a vital contribution to our school community. 2

SDUSD Immigrant students: Support our students’ success San Diego Unified is a strengths-based system. Language and cultural diversity are important strengths immigrant students bring to our schools Our students represent: 61 Countries 171 Languages

Access to a Broad and Challenging Curriculum San Diego Unified has invested in the academic success of our immigrant students Reclassification testing now open to 2nd graders Schools receiving reclassification kits including pre-populated forms for all eligible students LOTE tests now offered in 14 languages -- up from 5 -- to let students receive credit for existing skills, so they can access additional course options System 44 literacy curriculum (based on the 44 sounds in the English language) being piloted across district International Centers offer differentiated pathways to meet the needs of individual students, providing access to grade-level coursework Internal organization to support this work: Office of Language Acquisition part of Instructional Cabinet, working collaboratively with Office of Secondary and Leadership and Learning English Language Learner resource teachers train school-based teachers to align lesson plans with common core and English Language Development Standards

Closing the achievement gap The focus on instruction is showing results Long-term English learners reduced by 2,000 in 2 years Reclassification rate for students who are eligible: 23.7% Over 1,000 students passed the LOTE exam International Center students thriving: After the first semester, of the students who received a grade, 73% of them passed their math course SBAC scores for Latinos: Up 5 points SBAC scores for English Learners: Up 6 points Graduation rates for Latinos: 87% Graduation rates for English Learners: 70% Graduation rate for students reclassified before Grade 8: 96% 5

Positive School Environment and Culture Fear and trauma are direct threats to the academic success of our students: Schools report rising levels of anti-immigrant intolerance Teachers report increased parent concerns 6

Positive School Environment and Culture Board Actions: December 12, 2016, resolution reaffirming right of all students to public education regardless of immigration status April 25, 2017, resolution supporting ban on companies building border wall Recognizing this threat to student achievement, our the school board has taken a strong stand in support of immigrant students 7

Positive School Environment and Culture Based on Board Actions the District has: Notified all staff and parents of their legal rights as immigrants and/or their obligation to protect the education rights of immigrants Filed amicus brief to join Santa Clara County vs. Trump Protecting sanctuary cities from federal retribution 8
