Wartime Civil War

The Beginning of the War The Confederate States of America (CSA) fired on Fort Sumter Lincoln calls on the state militias for 75,000 troops in response Lincoln’s goal is to preserve the Union at any cost

Lincoln’s Goal “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slaves I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.” (Lincoln's Letter to Horace Greeley)

The First Battle The first true battle fought between the two sides was at Bull Run -1861 The North believed it would be a swift victory Many civilians showed up to watch and picnic The Rebels were able to get the upper hand however and shouting the “Rebel Yell” they charged breaking the Union line Civilians were retreating along with the soldiers

The Battle of Bull Run

Effects of The Battle of Bull Run There were about 3,000 Union casualties and only about 1,750 Rebel casualties The North had believed that this was going to be a short war, this battle proved it wouldn’t be This battle gave the South hope that they could win

Casualties of War The Civil War had more casualties than any other war America has fought

Disease For every three men killed in battle, five died of disease The main reason for this was lack of sterile medical equipment or decent medicine Gangrene was a serious issue among the wounded as well

Photography The Civil War is the first war were photos were taken It was the first time civilians were getting a glimpse into the realities of war Bodies were sometimes moved to be more dramatic Photojournalism first became a thing during the Civil War, one of the most well know of whom is Mathew Brady
