Rock Cycle

Any rock can be changed into another rock! WITH THE ROCK CYCLE

The Original Earth was IGNEOUS... ESRT Now Earth is covered mostly by SEDIMENTARY ROCK. How did this happen? Igneous rocks were weathered and eroded Weathering and erosion changes rocks into… SEDIMENTS! Sediments were deposited, compacted and cemented to turn into… SEDIMENTARY ROCK!

The Rock Cycle! ESRT How does a SEDIMENTARY rock change into a METAMORPHIC rock? SEDIMENTARY rock undergoes HEAT AND PRESSURE The sedimentary rock changes to become… METAMORPHIC ROCK!

The Rock Cycle! ESRT How does a METAMORPHIC rock change into an IGNEOUS rock? METAMORPHIC rock gets melted deep under ground… Changes into MAGMA MAGMA or LAVA cools, crystallizes and solidifies to form… IGNEOUS ROCK!

ESRT The Rock Cycle! Igneous rock changes into metamorphic rock… Igneous Rock is subjected to heat and pressure Minerals enlarge and re-align Igneous rock changes form into metamorphic

ESRT The Rock Cycle! Igneous rock changes back into igneous rock… Igneous Rock is re-melted to change into… Magma…which solidifies into… IGNEOUS ROCK!

The Rock Cycle! ESRT Sedimentary Rock changes directly into igneous rock… Sedimentary rock is buried and melted into magma Which solidifies into… IGNEOUS ROCK!

(Remember you must be in slideshow mode!) Click the image below to load an animation from the Web. Use the animation to answer each of the questions on the note sheet. (Remember you must be in slideshow mode!)

The Rock Cycle! ESRT You MUST be able to explain how any rock changes into any other type of rock! CAN YOU DO IT?

Have it checked by the teacher! The Rock Cycle! On a poster, trace out the ROCK CYCLE WITHOUT all the arrows in the middle Put the NAMES of the different Rock Types and ROCK FORMING MATERIALS in your diagram Place a good sample of rock or rock material in the proper places on the diagram Have it checked by the teacher! NEATNESS COUNTS!!
