Energy is the ability to do work. What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Then what is work? Force and movement.
Traditional energy-resources that cannot be replenished Ex.) Oil,Wood, Natural gas, Nuclear fission, Coal Pros: Cheap and reliable Cons: Contribute to global Warming, non-renewable.
Pros: relatively inexpensive, Abundant supply, has a high load factor Coal Cons: Nonrenewable, coal ash problem and disposal problem Pros: relatively inexpensive, Abundant supply, has a high load factor
Nuclear Fission -splitting the atom and using uranium to harvest energy Pros: Very low fuel cost, virtually unlimited amount of fuel, clean energy Cons: could produce net negative amount of energy, power plants$$$, requires extremely high temperatures.
Natural Gas-flammable gas, mainly consisting largely of methane and other hydrocarbons, occurring naturally underground. Pros: -Cleaned of all the fossil fuels. -End use appliances already widespread. -Can be used as an automotive fuel. Cons: -Emits carbon dioxide when burned. -Explosive,potentially dangerous. -Nonrenewable fuel, supply cannot be replaced for millennia.
Oil-a natural gas derived from petroleum Cons: Release greenhouses when oil is burnt, Nonrenewable energy, oil spills can cause environmental disasters Pros: High energy density, Easy to produce and refine, Constant power source
Wood- fuel can be used for cooking and heating, and occasionally for fueling steam engines and steam turbines. Pros: -cheaper -can be grown -less pollution -improves forest health Cons: -requires more space -Needs safe disposal -equipment is expensive $$
Alternative Energy- Energy made in ways that do not deplete natural resources or harm the environment Pros: Very useful to everyone and generates a lot of energy at once Cons: $$$ very expensive and needs constant sunlight
Solar Energy-energy from the sun Cons: -Requires a wide area -Energy storage is expensive -Very expensive - Exotic materials Pros: -Solar energy is renewable -Environmentally friendly -Reduces electricity cost
Wind Energy-the process in which wind is used to generate energy. Pros: -Wind is a green energy source -Free -Produces no waste product Cons: -Cannot work without wind -Can be noisy -Can kill birds
Hydroelectric Energy-Flowing water that is turned into energy. Pros: -Flexibility -Is safe compared to nuclear energy and fossil fuels. -Renewable and clean. Cons: -Can cause accidents. -Expensive to build dams -Cause upstream flooding
Geothermal Energy- energy found from hot water and hot rock found under the earth. Pros: - Environmentally friendly compared to gas or oil. -Little or no fuel -Little impact on environment Cons: Dangerous gases come up from ground Can't build power plants everywhere
Biofuel-fuel created from any living matter. Pros: -Fuels tend to be cheap -Renewable Cons: -When burned they can create greenhouse gases.
