1. Explain what factors led the U.S. to become involved in WWI. Public opinion started to turn against Germany as they continued their unrestricted submarine warfare, US had close ties to England

2. Describe the economic affect of WWI on SC' economy. It boosted the economy with higher crop prices and new military bases being built.

3.Describe how African American soldiers were treated when they returned from war. The South was still racist and some would be murdered, hung in their uniforms even!

4. Many military bases were opened during WWI in SC 4. Many military bases were opened during WWI in SC. What was their affect on the economy? Brought soldiers who spent their money which boosted the economy.

5. Explain why African Americans would volunteer to fight in WWI for the U.S.? They wanted to fight and prove they were patriotic and hoped to end discrimination and gain equal rights.

6. What happened to the US as a result of entering WWI? The economy improved and people became very patriotic.

7. How did technology change life for people in SC during the 1920's? More people got electricity and were able to get appliances that made life easier.

8. Describe why most crop prices fell after WWI. There was overproduction and no more demand from overseas markets.

9. How would you describe the affects of prohibition on SC? It was a failure, crime actually increased.

10. What mass media did people in SC have and how did it affect them? People had access to radios and would go see movies, they felt connected to other parts of the US.

11. Describe the Southern Literacy Movement. It included groups like the Charleston Poetry Society which promoted literature, plays, and poetry by Southern writers.

13. Why were tourists drawn to SC during the 1920's when tourism began to grow in our state? Our warm climate, history, and culture

15. Describe the economy in SC during most of the 1920's. Agriculture was suffering and people moved to urban areas where they could get jobs at factories.

20. What affect did the Great Depression have on SC? We were already in a depression and it got worse!

21. What was the biggest New Deal program in SC? The Santee Cooper Electricity Program

22. What did the Rural Electrification Act do for many in SC? Brought electricity to many rural areas and farms.

23. What lasting affect did the CCC, the Civilian, Conservation Corps, have on SC? It helped build many parks that are still used today.

24. What effect did the 1934 strike at Honea Path have on unions in SC? It created anti-union sentiment which still exists today.

25. Which government program created during the New Deal still provides money to the elderly and disabled? The Social Security Act

26. Why would the Great Depression finally end? WW2

27. What effect did WWII have on SC's economy? It helped boost the economy and end the depression.

28. What did the Tuskegee Airman prove with their bravery during WWII? Proved African Americans could fly as well as anyone else.

29. How did James Doolittle contribute to the war effort during WWII? They lifted morale in the U.S. with their daring attack on Japan from an aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

30. Why were many SC men not able to serve in WWII? They found many of them were illiterate, could not read or write, and many were in poor health.
