Genre analysis of... Who framed Roger Rabbit?

Text overview Roger Rabbit is accused of murdering the Acme boss Marvin Acme The whole film is centred around the detective trying to decipher the clues to find the real murderer. This kind of film is not only entertaining but requires some thought process from the viewer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZOQyD81vrY&NR=1

What Genre is it? And why? From the synopsis, it should be a detective thriller and they use conventions of ‘film noir’ i.e. Eddie Valliant resembles a private eye. The main topic of the film is murder and enigma. There are times when the film resembles it’s first glance genre through the use of iconography. The cartoon characters resemble real life character archetypes, such as the femme fetale (Jessica Rabbit)

Does it break the conventions of genre? And how? Yes! It does break the conventions! ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ is a hybrid film of animation and real-life comedy. Mix the reality and drama with a comical twist, a sit-com (situation comedy) film. When you watch the film, the comedy merges well with the ‘film-noir’ side. E.G. Roger Rabbit (who is a cartoon character) worries about real-life situations which would not normally affect him.

Reality and conviction within the text. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFCIaMy MORg The fourth wall principle is not only broken but it is parodied in this clip. We think we are looking at a cartoon when in fact we looking at a real film It is when these two worlds collide that the reality is really played with in an ironic fashion..

Cultural context in connection with genre Makes reference to cartoon industry. Famous figures are embedded into the film (intertextuality). The cartoon characters that we recognise as iconic make cameo appearances as well as the main characters

Audience response and interaction. Created in 1988 and it’s still popular even nowadays due to being innovative and iconic. It’s a cartoonised film that can still create emotions (sympathises with the character despite that they do not exist in reality.) The film promotes Hollywood owning to that cartoons were very popular during the 1940s/50s, and film- noir was also in fashion during that time period. 40 years later the two genres brought together and modernised, in a way for the film to make a reference to itself and play with reality.
