A Sample of What Your Child Will Be Working on in 4th Grade Using whole-number arithmetic to solve word problems, including problems with remainders and problems with measurements Multiplying and dividing multi-digit numbers in simple cases (e.g., multiplying 1,638x7 or 24x17) Understanding and applying equivalent fractions (e.g., recognizing that ¼ is less than 3/8 because 2/8 is less than 3/8) Adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions in simple cases (such as 2 ¾ - 1 ¼ or 3 x 5/8) and solving related word problems Understanding simple decimals in terms of fractions (e.g., rewriting 0.62 as 62/100) Measuring angles and finding unknown angles in a diagram

Social Studies The social studies text, PowerPoint, and project-based learning are the tools used to explore the units. The following units are taught in fourth grade: Our Land and First People: Land as a Setting for Human Activity Exploration and Settlement: Exploration The English Colonies: New Places, New Ideas The American Revolution: Freedom

School-to-Home Connections Homework: Reading is a requirement of the state and it should be a part of your evening routine when it comes to homework. We incorporate this into Science and Social Studies reading in order to help boost non-fiction comprehension. Homework is vital to the success of your child. It allows them the opportunity to reinforce the skills that were taught in the classroom. No excuses should be given. Ex. I have dance tonight, I have football practice, etc… At home resources: Starfall.com - reading EducationCity – reading and math Study Island - in some cases – all subjects Jumpstart.com – reading and math Meegenius.com - reading (free books to read online or they can be read to your child) Coolmath.com Funbrain.com Google Chrome Apps *If the Internet is not an option for you please see your child’s teacher.

Standardized Tests April TBD - Milestones

Milestones (CRCT) Features include: inclusion of constructed-response items in ELA and mathematics, in addition to selected-response items inclusion of a writing component (in response to text) at every grade level and course within the ELA assessment; inclusion of norm-referenced items in every grade and content area to complement the criterion-referenced information and to provide a national comparison; and transition to online administration over time, with online administration considered the primary mode of administration and paper-pencil back-up until transition is completed.

Milestones (CRCT) English Language Arts [CC Georgia Performance Standards] will require close analytic reading to construct meaning, make inferences, draw conclusions, compare and contrast ideas, themes, etc., as well as synthesize ideas and concepts across multiple texts – will require students to develop informative/explanatory responses or narratives, produce opinions/arguments – citing evidence from text(s) and using standard language conventions, etc. Mathematics [CC Georgia Performance Standards] – will require demonstration of conceptual understanding of concepts, procedural skills and fluency, problem solving, modeling, and mathematical reasoning

Milestones (CRCT) Science [Georgia Performance Standards] will require understanding of the core concepts, ideas, and practices of science to explain scientific phenomena –with content and Characteristics of Science/Nature of Science standards serving as co-requisites Social Studies [Georgia Performance Standards] will require understanding of the past and its influence on the present and future – including the interconnectedness of history, culture, geography, economics, and governments/civics
