Egyptian Religion What you will learn: Basic facts about how the ancient Egyptians viewed and used religion in their lives.

What did Egyptians think their Gods looked like? Egyptians believed that their gods were all human or had the bodies of humans and the heads of animals.

How many gods were there in ancient Egypt? There were over 2,000 gods. There were main gods that most Egyptians worshipped and individual gods that each town and city worshipped. An example of this would the city of Memphis worshipping a god named Ptah as their main god, not Re.

How did the gods act? The gods interacted only with the pharaoh of Egypt. Some pharaohs believed they were living gods. Egyptians believed that gods controlled the workings of nature. Ex. Most natural objects (sun, Nile River, sky, women) all had their own god or goddess. It was believed that happy gods brought good events and angry gods brought hardships.

How did Egyptians worship the gods? Egyptians made offerings of food and gifts at places called temples. In the temples would be high priests and priests. They did not sacrifice humans or slaves.
