Expressions for accepting and declining an invitation Accepting an Invitation Thank you. I’d love/am glad to. Thank you. That would be very nice. Thanks. I’d love to. What time would you like me to come? Thank you. I certainly would. When shall we start? We’d very much like to attend the party. That’s really very kind of you. That sounds a very nice idea. With pleasure.

Expressions for accepting and declining an invitation Thank you. I wish I could but… Sorry. I’m afraid I can’t. What about some other time? Thank you very much for asking me, but I’m already booked up for next Saturday. I’d love to, but I already have plans for tomorrow morning. Thank you just the same. I’m afraid I’ve already promised to meet Julie tomorrow night. Much to my regret, I wouldn’t be able to come. Oh, what a shame! I’ll have to attend a conference that day.

Work in groups. Each groups works as a family and they are making a family plan for a holiday. Each of the family has his own idea about where to spend the holiday, so all the members have to discuss together to see whether they can make some compromise and come up with a plan that all will agree on. Procedure: 1) Each student will be given a card telling him or her the role to play in the family. 2) The family members introduce themselves, without revealing their task. 3) Ask the father to open the family discussion. 4) Several groups will role play in front of the class.

The father Your idea of a holiday is something relaxing, short and cheap. Going abroad is so tiring. You like your brother very much—why not take him and his wife, too? The mother You want to go to some exotic place like China or Peru for at least three weeks. But you can't stand your brother- in-law—he should stay at home. The 18-year-old daughter You want to go to the sea for at least two weeks, by plane, of course—and bring your boyfriend, too— this is most important. The 16-year-old son You don't want to go with your boring family anywhere—but if you have to, it should be as short and as close as possible. The father's brother You want to go with your brother's family wherever they go—and take your wife as well.

Useful expressions I’d rather go to the seaside... I prefer staying at home… I’d rather my brother went with us… I prefer to go to China… I think it’s a good idea. I couldn’t agree more. That’s my opinion, too.   It’s a good idea but … Well, I’m not completely sure. That’s absurd/ridiculous/… Are you joking/kidding me/crazy? I dislike/ I can’t stand… I’m tired of/ fed up with… … really bugs me/ makes me… … mad/drives me crazy.
