Learning Target: I can take part in a trench warfare simulation to understand what life was like in the trenches during World War I. Do Now: What is trench warfare? How did military technology impact World War I?

Trench Warfare Soldiers were fighting a new kind of battle, trench warfare, troops huddled at the bottom of rat infested trenches and fired artillery and machine guns at each other.

Trench Warfare As you are watching the video picture what it would be like to be fighting in the trenches during WWI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G4ZY66BG38

Activity Today we are going to take part in a trench warfare simulation using paper balls. In order to take part in the simulation effectively you must follow the rules, if rules are not followed you will be removed from the simulation.

Agenda Tables 1,2,3, you will represent the Central Powers. Tables 4,5,6, you will represent the Allied Powers. The tape/sign in the middle represents “No Man’s Land. Using the paper balls as ammunition you are going to simulate trench warfare during WWI, throughout the “war” you are going to be stopped. Read the background information on trench warfare When asked to stop, you will listen to an excerpt from a soldiers letter who fought in the trenches to gain a stronger understanding and visual of what the war was like. After the war is over you will return to your seats to complete the guided questions on your experience of trench warfare and the connections you can make to soldiers during WWI.

Simulation Rules No throwing of anything other than paper Do not throw the paper as hard as you can, we are not here to hurt people. When hit with a ball you are out of the war. Listen when told to stop throwing balls. Listen to excerpts of soldiers letters. If rules are not followed we will end the simulation.
