Gravity Problems

1. "How far?" Distance traveled = ½ (acceleration * time * time) The DISTANCE that an object travels can be calculated with Distance traveled = ½ (acceleration * time * time)

Problem #1 In the movie the Blues Brothers, the Chicago Nazi's car free fell for 10s. How Far did the car fall? G U E S

2. “How Long”

Problem #2 One of Mr. Harper's evil CPS students (don't worry not you guys) decided to drop their family cat off the roof of their house to find out if it would land on its feet. If the house is 10m high, how long will the cat free fall for before hitting the ground safely? G U E S

3. “How Fast” Vf=gt (for falling objects starting at rest)

Problem #3 Mrs. Harper is being chased by the one legged alligator. She isn’t paying attention and runs off a cliff and begins to fall. She falls for 5 seconds before landing in water. How fast is she going after 5 seconds? G U E S

Gravity Practice Problems Which Formula do I use???? Key formulas: “How Far:” d = ½ gt2 “How Long:” t=√(2d/g) “How Fast:” vf = gt (for a falling object that starts from rest) use 9.8 or 10 m/s2 for g

Problem #4 It’s super fun bouncy ball up and down, down and up bounce, bounce, bounce day! A super ball escapes from the grasp of the talking monkey (Where’s he been anyhow?) and falls for 2 seconds before bouncing. How far did it fall?

Problem #5 A flying squid has lost control and begins its un-planned descent straight down. It was hovering above the ground without moving before it lost control. It is traveling at 10 m/s the moment it hits the ground. How long (time) was it uncontrolled flight? How high up was it before it falls?

Practice Problem 1 A driver is traveling eastward on a dirt road when she spots a pothole ahead. She slows her car from 14.0 m/s to 5.5 m/s in 6.0 s. What is the car’s acceleration? G U E S

Practice Problem 2 A cyclist travels at a constant velocity of 4.5 m/s westward, and then speeds up with a steady acceleration of 2.3 m/s2. Calculate the cyclist’s speed after accelerating for 5.0s. G U E S
