Aina Randrianantoandro ‘’Support to post-harvest fisheries technology’’ How simple raised racks curbed fish losses and changed the landscape along Lake Tanganyika in Burundi Aina Randrianantoandro
PRESENTATION OVERVIEW Introducing raised racks to reduce fish losses Video projection on this FAO successful project in Burundi Current needs and opportunities for private investment and marketing
Introducing raised racks to reduce fish losses THE SITUATION BEFORE THE PROJECT Sun-drying on bare ground/on the sand prevailed AMONGST NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES: High post-harvest fish losses since the fish is usually trampled by pedestrians and eaten by animals High post-harvest fish losses during rainy and humid season Poor safety and quality products (fish with sand, herbs, pieces of wood, etc.) with low returns for fishers
Introducing raised racks to reduce fish losses POSITIVE AND LONG-TERM IMPACT AFTER THE FAO INTERVENTION ‘’Support to post-harvest fisheries technology’’ Introduction of metallic raised racks (inclined model) with facilities/mosquito nets for coverage during adverse weather Wide adoption of the raised racks by fish processors in Burundi Reduced post-harvest losses Better safety and quality products with increased consumer confidence Improved returns to fish processors

Current needs and opportunities for private investment and marketing Footsteps for fish losses reduction in Africa INVESTMENT IN FISH PROCESSING TECHNIQUES INVESTMENT IN FISH PACKAGING
Current needs and opportunities for private investment and marketing NEED FOR INVESTMENT IN FISH PROCESSING TECHNIQUES in metallic raised racks, especially the metallic and inclined models promoted by FAO in renewable energy for fish drying (solar dryer) and for fish cooling (photovoltaic refrigerators) for wider dissemination and replication of the FAO Thiaroye Processing Technique or FTT-THIAROYE: an innovative fish processing technique developed by CNFTPA - a training institute in Senegal - in partnership with FAO
Current needs and opportunities for private investment and marketing Title OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVESTMENT IN FISH PACKAGING Example of the Burundi: fish packaging (fresh fish, dried fish, smoked fish) still at its very simple stage The Burundian consumers has been willing to pay premium price for raised-racks dried fish - of much better quality (9,000 fbu/kilo for raised-racks fish vs 4,000 fbu for fish dried on sand), they would certainly be tempted by functional and attractive packaging ideas. Also considering that fisheries play an important in the economic and social life in Burundi (1/3 of the animal protein consumption in the country stems from fisheries and the sector employs more than 100,000 people)
