Varía Radar & Smart bike lights Marc Bainbridge Good day Marc PM from Garmin Thank you for allowing us to attend such an important indaba and present our Varia range of Safety products I truly hope, part of the solution to the situation Marc Bainbridge Outdoor & Fitness Product Manager Garmin Southern Africa

40% of Cycling deaths are caused by Cyclist being hit from behind Road Stats 40% of Cycling deaths are caused by Cyclist being hit from behind US NHTSA survey, 12% of cyclists felt threatened during their last ride. BBC Survey in the UK, over 50% of people believe it is too dangerous to cycle on the roads in their local area. Australia Survey - Perceived danger of cycling due to lack of safe places to cycle and fear of being hit by motorist (26% of respondents.) Based on worldwide data This excludes accidents and injuries Paints a very clear picture of the global state of cycling on the road, and clearly shows us that the main threat to cyclists is the one coming from behind.

Garmin varia – How it Works Rear Tail light has built in Radar Detects vehicles from 140m back Alerts rider to approaching vehicle on Device or Display unit Gives colour indicator to classify perceived threat to cyclist (Orange – Car approaching & Red – Car approaching is a danger) Can track up to 8 cars at a time Tail light rapidly pulses as vehicle approaches to alert driver 5 Hours battery in High power mode 2 options – Garmin head unit or display units Garmin loves all cyclist, not just Garmin users, Basic principle is it’s a rear facing radar and Tailight , that detects cars approaching from 140m back. Not just detect cars, any threat to safety. Motorbikes / faster cyclist its about being a perceived threat based on their speed in relation to yours Riding in a pelaton – No problem, moving at the same speed still detect vehicles around 120m, noise

Garmin varia – How it Works Orange/Red light indicates a car has been detected Tracks up to 8 vehicles at a time from up to 140m Both will display that they are connected, either by the light on the left on display unit or the connect signal on the top right. The display unit also displays a green light at the top As the radar detects a vehicle at 140m the green light turns orange and the vehicle is represented by a white light, that tracks up the display as the vehicle approaches. This is the sames as you can see on the Garmin Edge device The device will track up to 8 cars similtaneously, and this is hugely important, as you don’t want to pull out behind a car only to be hit but another vehicle There are many scenarios for this application. We have all looked up and seen a pothole coming or a pedestrian and had to make a decision of how to get around this obstacle. Having knowledge of cars approach is a key to this decision. And lets be honest, not all cycling accidents are the vehicles fault. Cyclists do unknowingly pull out infront of a vehicle by mistake. This advanced knowledge, allows you to make a more informed decision in these situations. Indicator to show Radar is paired with a display unit

Garmin varia – How it Works RED indicates a greater threat to the ride This is based on the vehicles speed in relation to the rider If the Red light is displayed, this indicates a much greater threat to the rider, which is why there are two colour settings. Orange notifies you that there are vehicles, the Red indicates that the vehicle is moving at an excessive speed and is a much great threat. This is vitally important, as a rider becomes used to the tracking of vehicles, the differentiaton of threat levels is key
