Reading at home with your child

The Power of Reading -Creating a love of reading -Enabling independent reading -Enjoyment, information and understanding -Key focus on comprehension

How do we teach reading? -Phonics -Shared reading -Guided reading -Independent reading -Focused reading activities -Class stories -Reading across the curriculum

What can you do at home? Ensure you have: -access to books at home -a quiet place to read -time to read -opportunity for children to see you as a reader Do: -read to your child -listen to your child read -support their reading in positive ways -respect book choices -sit down

Reading to your child -Introduce your children to different types of books; classic fiction, chapter books, short stories, joke books, poetry, non-fiction. -Read them the book that was your favourite when you were a child. -Read slowly, with expression. Try to use different and funny voices for characters. -Follow the words and read the story using the pictures. -Talk about what is happening and what might happen next. -Leave the story on a cliffhanger!

Now you try... Choose a book and try it with a partner.

Reading requires 2 skills Phonics and Word Recognition -The ability to recognise words presented in and out of context. -The ability to blend letter sounds (phonemes) together to read words. -Other strategies Understanding -The ability to understand the meaning of the words and sentences in a text. -The ability to understand the ideas, information and themes in a text. -If a child understands what they hear, they will understand the same information when they read. - Developing inference when reading

144 spellings of the sounds!!!!! Phonics 26 letters 44 phonemes 144 spellings of the sounds!!!!!

Blending and segmenting Blending for reading Segmenting for spelling

What to do if your child is stuck?

What to do if your child is stuck? KS1 -Use phonics -What sound does it begin with? -Can you say the sounds in a word? -Blend -Read to the end of the sentence -What word would make sense? -What is the text about? -What word might fit in? -Look at the picture, does it help? KS2 -Skip the word you do not know and try to guess what word would fit best in the gap - Is there a part of the word you recognise - Can you break it into syllables?

Independent strategies When I get stuck on a word in a book, There are lots of things I can do. I can do them all, please, by myself; I don't need help from you. I can look at the picture to get a hint. Or think what the story's about. I can "get my mouth ready" to say the first letter. A kind of "sounding out". I can chop up the words into smaller parts, Like on or ing or ly, Or find smaller words in compound words Like raincoat and bumblebee. I can think of a word that makes sense in that place, Guess or say "blank" and read on Until the sentence has reached its end, Then go back and try these on: "Does it make sense?" "Can we say it that way?" "Does it look right to me?" Chances are the right word will pop out like the sun In my own mind, can't you see? If I've thought of and tried out most of these things And I still do not know what to do, Then I may turn around and ask For some help to get me through.

How to use these strategies at home John let his pet frog go. It ******across the grass. What is the first sound? It h***** across the grass. What would make sense? It hopping across the grass. Does that sound right? It hopped across the grass Peachie looked at if she had lost her ****** marrow- bone What kind of word is missing? Is it a verb? A noun? An adjective? lost her f***** marrow- bone What adjective do you know begin with f? lost her fierce marrow- bone Does that sound right? lost her friendly marrow- bone

-Being able to read does not mean you understand what you read. Comprehension/Understanding -Being able to read does not mean you understand what you read. -Your child might sound like a good reader but may not necessarily understand what the text means. -The best way to develop understanding is to talk about texts.

Easy to read but do you understand it? According to the previous ATA/IDE hard drive transfer protocol, the signalling way to send data was in synchronous strobe mode by using the rising edge of the strobe signal. The faster strobe rate increases EMI, which cannot be eliminated by the standard 40-pin cable used by ATA and ultra ATA. Easy to read but do you understand it?

How can I help my child to understand a text? TALK

-Finding information on the page -Finding information on the page. How can I help my child to understand a text? -Being able to find information that is not on the page. -Looking for clues. -Questionning to clarify parts of the story and check understanding -Thinking about situations and predicting what might happen. -Putting yourself in a character’s shoes and understanding what is going on from their viewpoint. -Book talk to make your child think.

How can I help my child to understand a text? Open and Closed questions

-Have you read books from this author before? What to do before you begin to read? KS1 KS2 - What type of book is it? -Have you read books from this author before? - Predictions of the story -Do you know any story that might relate to the same topic? -Do you recognsie any characters from other books? -Predictions -cover -pictures -talk -games to play -Look through pics to stop racing through

What to do while you are reading?

While you read: -Make it fun -read to each other -take turns -don't rush -report back -meaning of words...pictures/context -mix up the session -make word lists -find out the meaning of words and use them -short sessions rather than timely blocks

What to do after you are reading?

After reading: -finding words -using words -retelling the story -changing parts of the story -favourite picture/character -interview a character -change the setting -make a wanted poster -compare to another story -write a book review -sequence the story -describe the character -2 stars and a wish
