9th Grade Registration for the 2017-2018 School year

The green registration sheet January 5th -12th Your teachers will place their highest level course recommendation on your form.

What do I do first?? Read through your course description booklet thoroughly with your parent(s)/guardian. Review teacher recommendation. Take some time to think about which courses might interest you as well as your future goals/plans. Begin the process of filling out your green registration form.

The green registration form Fill in the four core academic subjects with the correct course number and level. Fill in the foreign language of your choice. (*If you choose not to take a language, fill in 1 credit’s worth of an elective in it’s place.)

Core Course Information Four Major Academic Subjects/Levels ~English, Social Studies, Math, and Science ~Levels Honors (approx. 45 min – 1 hr. homework per night in each subject taken AND an 8-10 hour summer project per Honors course due early in the year) G/HP College Prep (CP) Seminar *Must take seminar English AND History CEW *LCTI students only Studies

Core Course Information Math Pathways Pre-Algebra B…to Algebra 1 or Foundations Of Algebra Algebra 1…to Algebra 2 CP(if you do not pass the Keystone Exam) or GHP(if you pass the Keystone Exam) A grade of “C” or better is required to proceed in all math courses Algebra 2…to Geometry Honors or Geometry GHP *When choosing your math level, take your current grades/course interest into consideration/teacher recommendation as well as the average of your tests and quizzes. This average, rather than your overall average, is a great indicator of your subject mastery.

Science & Social Studies FYI! If you plan on taking Chemistry 1 Honors in 10th grade, you must earn an “A” in Algebra 2. Science Fair is no longer mandatory with Gifted or Honors Level Science classes. It is a club choice. History Day is also a club choice and no longer a mandatory requirement for GHP or Honors American Studies.

Core Course Information Biology Honors -If you take Biology you will need to pass the Keystone Biology test to graduate.

Foreign Language Options Proceed to the next level of the language that you are currently taking. (Level 2) *Grade pre-requisite is a “C” or above. Pay special attention to your test/quiz average. Option to choose a different language than you are currently taking. -Level 1 (French, German, Spanish) *If you choose not to take a foreign language, you must fill in one credit worth of an elective.

Foreign Languages (Cont’d) Traditional College…3 consecutive years of the same modern foreign language (2 at the high school level). More competitive colleges…4-5 years Other Language Elective Options -American Sign Language 1 -Latin 1

Foreign Language (Honors) Must have: Teacher Recommendation Final average of ‘A’ in the level I course Skill (tests) average of ‘A’

Honors Course Requirements Summer Reading and Writing Assignments -must be completed by the first day of school -must complete all four marking periods including the required summer assignments in order to receive the weighted grade. -students taking an Honors level course in 9th grade will receive the summer assignment packet(s) at the end of this school year.

What about electives? Fill in your elective choices adding up to a total of 1.5 credits at the top of your sheet. Fill in your four alternate electives at the bottom of the sheet. PUT IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE!!!

Tips for choosing electives… Concentrate on the courses listed on the BACK of your course registration form. It is a complete list of the courses that 9th graders are allowed to take. *If it’s not on the back of your sheet, you cannot take it! When you choose an elective, read the description in your course registration booklet to find out if it would be something that interests you. Check for prerequisites! Make sure you are choosing electives from a variety of areas: i.e. FCS, TE, & Art – not all TE!

Electives (Honors) Concert Band Honors, Orchestra Honors and/or Chorus Honors, Select Choir -these courses require an audition -on your registration sheet, sign up for REGULAR band, orchestra and chorus. -upon successful completion of your audition, your high school counselor will complete a schedule change.

Electives (Weighted) Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering -4 year sequence of courses geared towards students interested in the engineering field of study. -The first course in the sequence is 991, Intro to Engineering Design. This is a full year(1 credit)weighted elective. Biomedical -4 year sequence of courses geared towards students interested in the Medical field of study. -The first course in the sequence is 941, Principals of Biomedical Science. This is a full year(1 credit)weighted elective. * Check for prerequisites.

Electives (Weighted) Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering -4 year sequence of courses geared towards students interested in the Computer Science field of study. The first course in the sequence is 980, Introduction to Computer Science. This is a full year(1 credit)weighted elective. **Check for prerequisites.

The green registration form Miss Letoski will check students’ completed registration forms during civics classes. If your form is completed correctly it will be collected. If not, it will be sent home for corrections and final review. LCTI 9th graders can attend LCTI for a half-day. The four core academic subjects are taken at Parkland High School. You cannot take a Foreign Language Career, Education, & Work Readiness Language Arts & History are for students fully committed to LCTI and plan to enter the work force after high school. LCTI courses will fulfill your elective credits. 9th graders cannot take Heavy Equipment. In elective spot #1, fill in L943 on your sheet. Do not fill in any additional electives.

LCTI cont’d Additional application is required and a copy will be stapled to the green registration form. Original copies of the application will be sent to LCTI. The sooner this application is sent in the better. You will get your first choice; may not get 2nd or 3rd choices. During the 1st MP of LCTI, you will experience 3 labs and then be placed in one of those three for the remainder of the school year.

Important Dates! Friday, January 20th Parent meeting for the class of 2021; Thursday, January 5, 2017 @ 7pm in the PHS auditorium. Friday, January 20th -Completed registration forms due to Social Studies teachers.

Even More Important Dates! Finalized forms are due back to your homeroom teachers by Wednesday, February 1, 2017!!! Write clearly and in pencil!! Make sure your parent/guardian signs your registration form!! This should be completed in ink. All course changes are due by June 15, 2017 and must be made in writing.
