A Look Inside PBS LearningMedia Engaging Content includes videos, lesson plans, interactive games, audio clips, essays, discussion questions Comprehensive Over 120,000 resources for teachers and students Impact Standards-aligned resources Research-based content Talking Points: PBS LearningMedia, a partnership between PBS and the WGBH Educational foundation, is the primary portal to access PBS content for classroom use. PBS LearningMedia’s 100,000 resources span a range of media types – from lesson plans to interactives –are contextualized with support materials, and are aligned to Common Core standards, including state standards for Custom Service users.

Content to Inspire Students to… Investigate and Visualize Experiment and Play Examine and Question Journey and Explore Access Experts and Develop Skills Digital can be a springboard to inspire students to… Investigate and Visualize primary source materials and data to draw their own conclusions – difficult concepts textbooks alone can’t get across Experiment and Play with interactive games and simulations Examine and Question art, artifacts, and objects through image libraries Journey and Explore other countries, museums, research centers, and habitats – particularly important as field trips become less feasible due to restricted budgets Access Experts in the field to see real projects and discussions and develop career readiness skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration

Teacher Registration Site visitors are prompted to register here Talking Points: Upon visiting PBS LearningMedia for the first time, you will be able to register for a free account via the orange button on the left-hand side of the page. Information is collected from users to help personalize and localize their experience. By providing your local zip code when creating your profile, you will be directed to your local site and Custom Service.

Teacher Registration Select Sign Up to begin creating an account Talking Points: After selecting “Sign Up,” uses will be prompted to provide their name, email, and school’s zip code and will be able to create a password. Your email and school’s zip code is needed to provide access to the Custom service. Once an account is created, you will be able to update your profile by identifying your role and school name. Select Sign Up to begin creating an account Provide your name, email, and school zip code to localize your experience

New and topical content Homepage Features Search options News and updates New and topical content Talking Points: Options at the top of the page enable users to browse content by grade and subject, standards alignment, or by conducting a keyword search. The feature well in the center of the page is updated frequently to reflect weekly content themes, news and events. Presenter Tip: You may choose to go live to the site from this point forward. If not, the following slides highlight the key functionalities of the site. Each highlighted section is animated on this slide.

Searching for Resources Standards Search Keyword Search Keyword Search Filters Talking Points: By clicking on “Browse Standards,” users will be directed to an expanded set of standards based search options, which will be covered on a later slide. Users can also conduct a keyword search by typing the topic in the search bar and clicking the magnifying glass on the left hand side of the page or pressing “Enter” on their keyboard

Filter by Grade, Subjects, and Media Types Filtering Your Search Talking Points: After typing in a keyword in your search bar, use the dropdown menu for each category to filter you keyword search by grade, subject and/or media type. Filter by Grade, Subjects, and Media Types

Search Results Turn images off Include teacher-built resources in your search Sort results by: Relevance Newest/Oldest Alphabetical Most Viewed Most Favorited Talking Points: On the search results page, resources can be filtered by the categories on the left-hand side of the page and results can be sorted on the top right-hand side of the page. Images can be turned on and off for faster page refreshing. Presenter Tip: If live on the site, click the plus sign for each filtering option to demonstrate how the filters work. For the “Permitted Use” section, it’s important to note that many resources are downloadable to help alleviate issues teachers may face when streaming content in their classrooms. Also, note that Collection pages (covered in a later slide) will appear in search results along with all other resource types. Click the + sign to expand each category and filter your search results

Resource Pages Media Type Access Support Materials Favorite Resource Share Resource via Social Media or Email Quick Assign the Resource Resource Info Talking Points: This image highlights a resource page on PBS LearningMedia. The title and description appear above the media resource and icons on the left-hand side of the page indicate additional information and ways to engage with the resource – from accessing support materials (documented on the next slide) to sharing the resource on social media or through email. By clicking the heart icon, resources can be selected as “Favorites” and will be curated in users’ Favorites folder, which is accessible through your Dashboard. The “quick assign” option An upcoming slide documents the process for managing favorites. By clicking the “quick assign” icon a unique Assignment Code will be generated for you that can be immediately used with your students.  This feature uses our existing Assignment Code functionality which allows students to complete assignments without creating an account. Presenter Tip: You may choose to show another resource page to highlight these features. If using this particular resource, note that it can be downloaded by pressing the download button under the video and that it is available in both English and Spanish as noted under the right-hand side of the video. This resource also showcases the closed captioning function in the upper left-hand side.

Resource Pages Download option for select content Turn on Spanish translation Support materials for students and teachers Additional suggested resources Standards alignment Talking Points: The bottom half of the resource page provides support materials, such as teacher and student guides, activities, and discussion questions. Users can also view standards alignment and a list of suggested resources. Presenter Tip: Note that the support materials and standards fields can be expanded by clicking the plus sign, and it is helpful to demonstrate this if you are live on the site.

Collection Pages Collections contain curated resources around a particular subject or topic Using the Media Type filter, users can choose to view only Collections Talking Points: Collection pages curate resources around specific themes, subjects, and series. Collection pages appear in search results, and searches can be filtered by collections by clicking the Media type filter on the left-hand side of the search results page. Presenter Tip: The second Collection image is animated and will appear when you click the spacebar or right arrow.

Browse by Standards Choose Standards: Common Core State Standards National Standards State Standards (Available in Custom Service) Talking Points: As noted earlier, content can also be browsed by standards-alignment. At the top of the homepage, click “Browse Standards” to be directed to an expanded standards search page. In addition to browsing Common Core and National Standards documents, Custom users can browse by State Standards. Presenter Tip: The “Browse By Standards” image and text are animated and will appear when you press the spacebar or right arrow.

Presenter Tip: The highlighted boxes and text are animated and will appear when you press the spacebar or right arrow. Access Your Dashboard Click Dashboard to: Manage Your Favorites, Assignments and Folders Update Your Profile Use Productivity Tools View Student Site Talking Points: Returning to the homepage, the Dashboard allows users to access their favorites, update their profiles and use productivity tools. Presenter Tip: The text is animated and will appear when you press the spacebar or right arrow.

View Favorites and Folders Sort favorites by: Newest to Oldest Oldest to Newest A to Z Z to A Option to include notes Talking Points: After selecting “favorites” from your dashboard, you will be directed to your favorites page. Note that when you select a resource as a favorite by clicking the heart icon on the resource page, the media will appear in the full list of favorites. Resources you identify as favorites are curated here

Add Favorite Resources to Folders Click the box next to select resources Click “Add to Folder” Talking Points: Favorites can be curated into individual folders created by users. To add a favorite to a folder: Select the resource(s) you’d like to add by clicking the box in the upper left-hand corner of the resource Click “Add to Folder” Access individual folders

Add Favorite Resources to Folders Select which folder(s) you’d like to add your resource or create a new folder Talking Points: A list of the folders you created will appear or you can add a new folder by typing in a name Select the folder(s) you would like to which you’d like too add the resource Save your updates Save the updates you made

View and Manage Folders Add a new folder to begin curating media View contents of folder Talking points: Once in the Dashboard, a full list of folders will appear on the left-hand side of the screen Folders can be added via the steps outlined on the previous slides or by clicking “Add a New Folder” once in the Folders section of the Dashboard Click on the plus sign next to each folder to reveal the details of the folder Folders can be edited using the pencil icon next to the “Folder Name” and “Folder Description” The Folder URL can be copy and sent to colleagues, so they can view the resources in that folder Click “View Folder” to see the content curated in a particular folder Note that if a folder is deleted, it will be removed from the Folders section, but the content will still remain in the Favorites section of the user’s Dashboard List of all folders Link to folder contents that can be shared
