Supplies and Organization On the first day of school your teacher gave to you Organization 1 box of crayons 1 Regular Pencil 1 Mechanical Pencil 1 Red pen (for correcting) 2 Spiral Notebooks 1 planner 1 homework folder (see organization) 1 Data folder 1 Transparent Sleeve Students would heavily benefit from a 3-ring binder (I’d suggest the 2-inch size) and some class dividers. I will be teaching organizational skills. If your student has this, they won’t need the homework folder.

Donations Kleenex (I have plenty of hand sanitizer), but we will need lots of Kleenex Prizes and small gifts to give away as rewards (the classroom will be candy free, or nearly candy free) Dry erase markers (the smaller pen-sized kind) Extra three ring binders (2-inch size if possible, but I’ll take any I can get) Any other school supplies are welcome

Assignments and Homework Sixth graders work hard, but we also have fun. All assignments need to be completed on time. Late work will be accepted up until the end of the week. I will avoid homework assignments over the weekend. Missing assignments reports will go home on Mondays, and students need to complete those assignments as quickly as possible to avoid loss of privileges/study hall. When absent, students need to get copies of missed assignments (we have an extra copies bin). Please use your planner! Please ask questions about due dates because even I tend to forget.

Assignments and Homework I prefer not to give homework for the sake of giving homework. I cannot and will not say that there will be no homework. There will be multiple daily assignments that, if not completed in class, will need to be finished at home. From time to time a ‘perfect storm’ scenario might happen. Parents, please write a note if one of these things happens One assignment is taking far too long A rotation teacher assigned something that I didn’t know about resulting in extra homework There is some kind of emergency. I would really like to avoid any situation where homework takes more than one hour of your child’s time. Remember 30 minutes of reading each school night (150 minutes a week). Please document this in the planner.

Correcting and Student Privacy I believe that any assignment or test given should have every bit of learning squeezed out of it. Your student will be given a red pen. During correcting times this red pen is the only writing utensil allowed on their desk. Students will correct their own assignments and tests as often as possible to facilitate instant feedback. Please stress the importance of honesty and integrity during these correcting times. From time to time partners will correct with red pens. Some students have a hard time with this. If you feel like your student would not like someone else to see their work, please let me know (and I will correct it only).

Classroom Rules Keep hands, feet, and all objects to yourself. Listen to and follow all directions the first time they are given. Always use appropriate language and voice levels. Know and use appropriate manners. Wear appropriate clothing. Be respectful of others rights, property, and privileges.

Discipline We all make mistakes. In sixth grade students will use a behavior punch card. Exceeding the punch limit will result in loss of privileges. From time to time parental contact might be needed. Please do your best to be supportive of your child, the teacher, and the class at such times.

Cellular Phones Please refrain from allowing your student to bring a cell phone to school. Opting instead to contact me or the school when you need to reach your student. If you choose to send a cell phone with your student (and I completely understand) please be aware that they are not allowed to have them at their desks. In rare cases a student might be allowed to call their parent if that is the best form of parent contact, otherwise, they need to leave them turned off in their lockers. If your student is concerned about the phone being stolen I provide a red box in my room for cell phones that can be placed in a locked cupboard. If a cell phone is taken from a student who has it at their deak it will be taken to the office for the student to pick up at the end of the day. If it happens repeatedly then parents may need to come get the phone.

Good News Fun Friday: We will alternate each week between art, and other fun activities (usually STEM) Field Trips: We hope to do 3 this year, stay alert. STARBASE: Your student will go to Hill Air Force Base to participate in a STEM program. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) DARE: Layton PD officer Kyle Williams will be back for DARE this year. Science Fair: Your student will participate in the Science Fair this fall.
