“from TECO 2016 Madrid to WIGOS Visions 2040” Bertrand Calpini P CIMO, co-chair WIGOS

Current CIMO mission Promote: high quality observational data world-wide compatibility by: Defining technical standards, Testing and calibration Performing instrument intercomparisons, Implementing quality control procedures. Increasing expertise and Capacity-building for: Improving quality of products and services

One example : Hail detection Remote sensing + + In situ observation crowdsourcing

Maximum hail size - Radar 6 June 2015 A Hering et al.

Hail reports - MeteoSwiss App 6 June 2015 Note: over lakes, mountains and abroad the chances to get reports are low. A Hering et al.

New opportunities WIGOS: Data from “others” ITCs (crowd sourcing, big data) New technologies (PPP) As a natural evolution from: Improving quality of products and services via high quality observational data world-wide compatibility

Bertrand Calpini, Bruce Forgan, Jitze van der Meulen Panel discussion TECO Madrid, session 3 Bertrand Calpini, Bruce Forgan, Jitze van der Meulen

Current CIMO mission Promote: high quality observational data world-wide compatibility by: Defining technical standards, Testing and calibration Performing instrument intercomparisons, Implementing quality control procedures. Increasing expertise and Capacity-building for: Improving quality of products and services mission achievement vision

Future Mission (draft) Members achieve fit-for-purpose environmental measurements through appropriate standards and observing technologies.

Future Vision (draft) We are the source of information on the suitability of measurements for specific environmental intelligence (applications).

The results / outcomes (vision) We are used as the source of information on suitability of measurements for specific environmental intelligence (applications) Users and providers understand the importance of the measurement process in the environmental information chain. Users and providers are committed to traceability of ECV measurements. The quality and utility of emerging measurements is documented in the CIMO Guide and reference material.

To achieve this vision Collaborate effectively with all users and providers of measurements Develop and promote the implementation of good measurement practices Develop, and provide effective access to, standards and guidance material Coordinate the transition from new science and technology to operational implementation Characterize the utility of measurements from emerging alternative technologies

Thank you Merci
