Welcome to the Junior School Library Parent Information Session May 2017 Library Staff: Teacher Librarian: Mrs Sarah Mounsey Library Assistant: Ms Shirley Yeo Guest Wi-Fi Access  (this changes every month) Guest User Name: dcsgmay Password: vapWOGR1

Today I will cover: How we teach research skills in the Junior School What sources to use when researching How to use some of our school subscriptions for research How to help your child be an ethical researcher, including referencing images and text and not plagarising How to use our library catalogue (Destiny) What is on the library blog

What happens in library lessons? The students have a lesson every week or every fortnight. The lessons are dedicated to: Introducing new authors, titles and genres Library skills: how to use the library effectively Research skills and information finding The following slides are ones that have been used with students in different library lessons.

There are many steps that should be taken when researching, so that students are not simply cut and pasting. When these steps are used deeper learning takes place.

You should think of the Internet as only one source of information among many. Use a combination of information sources. WWWWW Who? Who wrote this information? What? What is the purpose of this site? When? When was this information written? Where? Where else can I confirm this information? Why? Why do I need this information? Image Credit: Library & Learning Resource Centre

First glance - know your URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) Most credible URLS: gov; edu ; sch Treat with care or caution: org; .com; net; co.uk So when you get your list of results, how do you choose which ones to click into? Discuss the pros and cons of each.

What can we use on the student portal? We use lots of different links from the student portal What can we use on the student portal? How to access this at home: Go to the parent portal Select learning Click on student portal

The Library Catalogue: Destiny     From the student portal website below choose Junior School Library The Library Catalogue is the STARTING point for looking for books and information. We use in school and you can use this at home. It’s DESTINY. This is our database of books which you can use without logging on by choosing GUEST access Here is the Website address for using with a laptop The Library Catalogue https://dcsg.follettdestiny.com

Finding Books for Your Child The Library Catalogue: Destiny Finding Books for Your Child For young children we talk of searching for a title, author or simple subject – eg dogs or snakes (KEYWORDS) Ask your children to show you how they use Destiny.

The Library Catalogue: Destiny Download the Destiny Quest app for free. Use guest access for quick searching or register with Miss Shirley so we can set up an account for you. If you are using on a tablet or smartphone you can downoad the DestinyQuest app for free. Displays slighly differently, but you search in same way and place holds.

When researching online never use Wikipedia and avoid google! Where to go for research: Online encylopedias that the school subscribes to: World Book or Britannica School. WebPath Express (in Destiny) KidRex DK Findout If you are accessing these from home you will need these passwords: Britannica: id number or username:dulwich Password: britannica World Book: username DulwichSNG Password: dulwich dREX

What can we use on the student portal? WebPath Express What can we use on the student portal? What is it? WebPath Express is a safe and credible search tool for students and teachers. WebPath Express integrates more than 85,000 trustworthy, relevant websites into our library catalog while filtering out questionable and irrelevant content. It is created by Follet who we use for our Destiny library catalogue. How to acccess: Go to Destiny Click on Dulwich College (Singapore) Senior : from August this will also be available from the Junior School button Select Catalog On the left tool bar select WebPath Express

What can we use on the student portal? Learning Logs and Referencing What can we use on the student portal? The students have all been given reference lists to use for learning logs or homework. They are also saved on eLockers. They don’t need to write out long websites, they can cut and paste them into a word document.

What can we use on the student portal? Referencing Generator What can we use on the student portal? We are using the Harvard style of referencing. Our focus is to ask students to ‘have a go’ at referecning and we are not being particular about the format in the Junior School. We are just delighted if they understand about being an honest researcher! Only Year 6 students have been shown the reference generator so far.

The Junior School Library Blog There is a lot of information about research on here. Go to the parent portal, then click library, then click Junior School Blog. Some parts of the library blog are behind a firewall for security purposes. These pages will ask you to log into firefly. Use your primary email account to set this up. You should only have to do this once.

Please indicate if you would be interested Questions please….. Please indicate if you would be interested in further sessions and on which topics. sarah.mounsey@dulwich-singapore.edu.sg These slides will be shared on the parent portal and on the JS Library Blog.
