From the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life Growth of the “Nones” From the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life

The fact that fewer Americans say they have a religious identity does not necessarily mean there has been a decrease in overall religiosity in America. It is possible that some proportion of those who don't identify with a specific religion are still personally or spiritually religious.

Percent of worshipers who: New people (5 yrs. or less) Long-Term Attendees (more than 5 yrs.) Participation: Attend worship weekly 71% 82% Are members of the congregation or in the process of joining 64% 92% Participate in one of the church’s small groups 36% 52% Serve in a leadership role in the church 28% 49% Give 5% or more to the church 53% Personal spiritual life: Spend time in private devotions every day 45% Feel worship services here help them with everyday living 88% 91% Say spiritual needs are being met in this congregation 84% 86% Experience God’s presence in worship here always or usually

Worshipers are older: Almost half of worshipers now are at or near retirement age. The median age of Presbyterian worshipers was 58 in 2001. (The median is the point where half of worshipers are younger and half are older.) Today the median age is 61. For every worshiper between the ages of 15 and 25 there are more than six worshipers over the age of 65.

What metaphor describes what is going on with us? Abrahamic Journey Exodus Exile Antioch

Acts 11 19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that arose over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews. 20 But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who on coming to Antioch spoke to the Hellenists[a] also, preaching the Lord Jesus. 21 And the hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. 22 The report of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were added to the Lord. 25 So Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.
