Who are we? Tinne Lotte

Programme Danish working culture Networking – why and how How to combine PBL and company cooperation The Careers Centre –how can we help you BE AWARE OF THE POSSIBLITIES THAT MAY APPEAR AND BEHAVIOUR THAT YOU SHOW https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq6y3RO12UQ

Danish working culture The Danish way: Very informal and relaxed Flat structure and open dialogue Trust, involvment and participation on all levels Focus on coorperation on all levels and an informal tone of voice Good working conditions and modern facilities Focus on professional development and competences

Network A network gives you the possiblity to develop, both personally and professionally Network is about sniffing around, leaving no stone unturned – and sometimes being lucky to find something and somebody that you do not know, however, which is useful (Birgitte Lenstrup, www.mannaz.com)

Say hallo to your neighbour Purpose of this exercise: To know another person, network – to tell to a stranger and hear what others want to do in DK besides studying – and to wake you up! Presentation of yourself, nationality What do you study, why did you pick AAU? What are you considerations in terms of getting a job, network, being part of Danish culture/customs? (e.g. participation in social event at the Student house, doing projects with different nationalities etc.) 15 minutes!

Network – why? Get new information, insight and inspiration Up to date on related topics in your field Position yourself for a job Door openings to people you won’t be able to reach on your own  Receiving more invitations to (the right) events as a participant, speaker or co-host Find partners for projects/ideas/collaborations And much more “if you give first and help others with all above topics, they will do the same for you” (Jan Vermeiren, founder of Networking coach) Story of Anna and Alexis - position yourself for a job YGA – one of the participants is very ”pushy” but in the nice way – give compliments for helping him, extra good treatment at the restaurant where he works, now I remember him even more, his personal side – I recommend him for jobs when we go on company visits where he cannot attend due to exams.

Why do you hesitate to start networking? I don’t have a network I don’t want to ask others to help me – bother them Why should they spend time on me I don’t have anything to offer in return I don’t have time to network I have already asked people I know

career related seminar Jobs Fun social events Contests Example of network Find International Office’s facebook – international Office Aalborg University Information about: career related seminar Jobs Fun social events Contests Tips and tricks in Denmark etc.

Summing up network Be strategic – get involved Ask politely for help and help in return Learn Danish

PROBLEM BASED LEARNING You chose AAU, you chose PBL 2 choices now: - work theoretically in your project groups - combine theory and practice in your project groups Find a company

THE RIGHT ROAD TO THE RIGHT JOB Student jobs - A big challenge/language barriers/lack of student jobs in general Project work with a company - Can be the road to both a student job, internship and a full time job - Networking, make at good impression

PBL – good for you, good for the company Obtained skills for YOU: Skills: Work in teams Discuss Compromise Listen/take action Be responsible Meet deadlines Obtained advantages for YOU: Advantages: Give you self confidence that you actually can perform and use your education in real life. Expand your professional network. Increase chances of getting a job – relevant experience.

Advantages for the COMPANY: PBL – good for you, good for the company Advantages for the COMPANY: The company can use your skills (listed in prior slides) as you work on a challenge proposed by the company. You can give them the latest knowledge within your field. A possibility to get to know you as a potential future employee. Good stuff  to tell companies in your job search, Careers Fair etc.

Project work – where to find one? On our website you can also find a list of relevant jobsites http://www.careers.aau.dk/jobsites/ - also unskilled jobs.
