Biology 1 Weekly Warmup 8.15-19.2016

Monday, August 15, 2016 Journal: Answer the following questions. 1. The result of a scientific experiment is PROBABLY valid if - A most people believe the result is correct. B repetitions give consistent data. C it is based on a hypothesis. D it is done by a world-famous scientist. 2. During a laboratory exercise, a student bumped the table where chemicals were being held. The storage containers tumbled over, and the different liquids spilled onto the table. What is the FIRST thing that other students should immediately do? A Wipe up the liquid with paper towels. B Set the containers upright. C Dilute the spill with water. D Tell the teacher what has happened. 3. Drug manufacturers must test their new products before they can be marketed. A pill containing a new drug was given to participants in Group A. A pill containing NO drug was given to the same number of participants in Group B. In this test, the drug given to the participants in Group A was the - A conclusion. B hypothesis. C dependent variable. D independent variable.

Summarizing the Scientific Method Observations vs Inferences

Monday: August 15, 2016 Review the image. -Write your observations Monday: August 15, 2016 Review the image. -Write your observations - What is being tested? - Find the D. I. C. - Write a testable hypothesis.

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 Answer the following question. Find the D. I Tuesday, August 16, 2016 Answer the following question. Find the D.I.C. A scientist wants to determine how water temperature affects the development of fish eggs. Which of the following would be an appropriate control group for such an experiment? A Ice is added to the water of one group of fish eggs and the tank is covered. B One group of fish eggs and water is placed in a sunny window. C The water of one group of fish eggs is kept at the same temperature as would be found in nature. D The water of one group of fish eggs is kept at the same temperature as would be found in nature and the tank is covered.

Exit Ticket

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 Review the information. Complete the questions. The following experiment was designed to test whether different concentration gradients affect the rate of diffusion. In this experiment, four solutions (0% NaCl, 1% NaCl, 5% NaCl, and 10% NaCl) were tested under identical conditions. Fifteen milliliters (mL) of 0% NaCl were put into a bag formed of dialysis tubing that is permeable to Na+, Cl-, and water. The same was done for each NaCl solution. Each bag was submerged in a separate beaker containing 300 mL of distilled water. The concentration of NaCl in mg/L in the water outside each bag was measured at 40-second intervals. The results from the 5% bag are shown in the table below CONCENTRATION IN mg/L OF NaCl OUTSIDE THE 5% NaCl BAG a)Graph the data for the 5% NaCl solution. b) Write a statement predicting results using a 1% NaCl solution.

Wednesday, August 17,2016 Directions: Pick one of the following questions to investigate. A. Identify the dependent and independent variables. B. Write a hypothesis. C. Write a procedure for how you would test the hypothesis. D. Identify the type of data that would be used. Does the wavelength of light (R.O.Y.G.B.I.V.) affect a plant’s growth? Does Rogaine really improve hair growth? Is acid rain causing a decline of frog populations? Does the hormone estrogen increase the milk yield of dairy cows?

Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Review the data. Answer the questions.

Thursday, August 18, 2016 Answer the following questions Thursday, August 18, 2016 Answer the following questions. Justify your response. 1. A student learns about the special characteristics of water in biology class. She knows that water will rise through a narrow tube through capillary action. Which of the following experiments would demonstrate that water has this ability? A placing a bouquet of white carnations in water containing blue dye and noting that after a time, the flowers turn blue B filling a container to the very top with water and noting that after the water is placed in freezing conditions, the ice has expanded above the brim of the container C heating an identical mass of water and metal to the same temperature and noting that after a time, the metal has cooled faster than the water has D taking the pH of water and finding that it is exactly neutral

Focus Friday August 19, 2016 Write About It! This week we have reviewed the steps in the scientific method. We understand that it is a process or series of steps. Do you believe that all the steps are necessary? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

Does the size of a fish tank determine how large a fish will grow? A. Identify the dependent and independent variables. B. Write a hypothesis. C. Write a procedure for how you would test the hypothesis. D. Identify the type of data that would be used. Does the size of a fish tank determine how large a fish will grow? Does aspirin keep cut roses fresher longer? Will crickets chirp more if the temperature is warmer? Do wounds heal faster when they are covered by Band-Aids?
