FARAKKA BARRAGE PROJECT (SERVING THE NATION SINCE 1975)

Farakka Barrage Project ( Brief Background) Farakka Barrage Project (FBP) is located at Farakka in West Bengal. It is a subordinate office under the M/o WR, RD & GR. The Farakka Barrage Project Authority was set up in 1961 with the mandate to execute and thereafter operate and maintain Farakka Barrage Project complex comprising of Farakka Barrage, Jangipur Barrage, Feeder Canal and its associated structures. The project construction commenced in 1961. The project was commissioned in 1975.

Farakka Barrage Project (Main objectives) To divert adequate quantity of Ganga waters into Bhagirathi - Hooghly river system though 38.38 km long Feeder canal for preservation and maintenance of Kolkata Port, by improving the regime and navigability of the Bhagirathi - Hooghly river system. The increased upland supply from Ganga at Farakka into Bhagirathi reduces salinity and ensures sweet water supply to adjoining areas including Kolkata. The rail-cum-road bridge built over Farakka Barrage across the river Ganga at Farakka provides direct road and rail communication link to the North-Eastern States with rest of the country. The Bhagirathi –Hooghly rivers, Feeder Canal and the Navigation Lock at Farakka form part of the Haldia-Allahabad Inland Waterway (National Waterway No.1).
