FRANÇAIS 2E OBJECT PRONOUNS How to go from: Im giving the pen to Jean. Je donne le stylo à Jean. Im giving it (the pen) to Jean. Je le donne à Jean. Im giving it (the pen) to him (to Jean). Je le lui donne.

DIRECT OBJECTS (DO)WHAT ARE THEY? Direct objects receive the action of the verb: Im watching the movie. (What am I watching? The movie=the direct object.) Hes closing the window. (Whats he closing? The window=the DO) Were writing letters. (Whatre we writing? letters=the DO) Youre giving flowers. (Youre giving what? Flowers=the DO)

OBJECT PRONOUNS EN FRANÇAIS Lets talk direct objects en français. The Agreement thing. Nouns can be masculine/feminine/singular/plural, right? So….en français….we have to match nouns w/pronouns for number and gender. Le/la/l(before a vowel sound) or les, remember?

POSITION….WHERE DO DOS AND IOS (INDIRECT OBJECTS) GO? BEFORE THE VERB! THEN….consider ne…pas, our verb sandwich. Breadhambread, right? BUT: breadcheesehambread, right? Subject ne…DO/IO…verb…pas… *In the PC, TREAT THE AUXILIARY!

IN OUR PREVIOUS EXAMPLES… Im watching the movie. Je regarde le film. Le film=masculine singular=le. Je le regarde. Hes closing the window. Il ferme la fenêtre. La fenêtre=fem. sing.=la. Je la ferme. Were writing letters. Nous écrivons les lettres. Les lettres=fem.pl.=les. Nous les écrivons. Youre giving flowers. Vous donnez les fleurs. Les fleurs=fem.pl.=les. Vous les donnez.

SO……IN THE NEGATIVE (VERB SANDWICH, NOW WITH DO/IOS) Je NE le regarde PAS. Il NE la ferme PAS. Nous NE les écrivons PAS. Vous NE les donnez PAS.

WHAT ABOUT IF PEOPLE ARE OBJECTS? Whoa! People as OBJECTS??? Cest possible?? OUI! TU ME REGARDES??? (You lookin at ME?) JE TE PARLE!!!! (Im talkin to YOU!)

BUT….NOW WERE TALKING ABOUT INDIRECT OBJECTS: This is what you need to know for when you have more than one (see very first example on this ppt: Je le lui donne.): Me=me, to me Te=you, to you (familiar) Nous=us, to us Vous=you, to you (formal/plural) Lui=to him or to her Leur=to them (show book examples here)

THE PENNANT RULE THIS IS THE ORDER OF OBJECT PRONOUNS… Me Tele/la/lluiyen Nouslesleur Vous
