PICKY EATER SYNDROME The truth is...there IS NO MOLD! There’s something for everyone: EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE careers integrate STEM.

Due to and in addition to LACK OF EARLY STEM EXPOSURE FOR ALL STUDENTS….problem lies within our FIXED MINDSET about WHAT qualifies as ENGINEERING and that impacts how students see themselves FITTING or NOT FITTING into that mold. Typically think of linear, mechanical, mathematical coursework and careers. Working for big companies, crunching numbers, lack of creativity, and must be “NATURALLY GIFTED.”

Definition of Engineering “Engineers solve problems with math and science” Compare to: Engineers are changing the world all of the time. They dream up creative, practical solutions and work with other inspiring people to invent, design, and create things that matter”

Importance of STEM Education The Research Early engagement in STEM is critical for our youngest learners because opportunity gaps in STEM can begin prior to preschool— and they can continue grow as students progress through school. - US Department of Education STEM Memo PreK Grade 4 Grade 8 High School Talk about my own 4th graders versus Kg. experiences Stamina, perseverance, mindset and predispositions Interest Dis-Interest From National Science Board (2010)

Importance of STEM Education The Research Let’s look at some of the FACTS about STEM education and CAREERS. Read slide.

Importance of STEM Education The Research – Career Readiness!

4 year college degree salary Why is Math so low?

Let’s look at some of the FACTS about STEM education and CAREERS. Read slide.

How do we get GIRLS & underrepresented minorities interested? SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM STILL? WITH WHOM? Girls at BEGINNING of buddies STEM…..vs. ENDING.

.  1. Students ask questions and define problems using criteria & constraints. 5. Team presentations provide opportunities to argue from evidence. 2. Students discover multiple solutions and that there are no “right” answers. Highly iterative, steps often need to be repeated however the steps that are repeated and the frequency can change from project to project Used to create products and processes 4. Students conduct fair tests using a prototype. 3. Students carry out Investigations, collect, analyze, and interpret data
